I was told In a facebook Group that I cross Posted in that its Green Slag, I was not aware you could find Green Slag in NW Ohio, about 60 miles west of Toledo outside of the City Of Bryan Ohio(for those who wanna look it up on a map). Can anyone confirm that it is green slag or if green slag is even possible in the area listed?

interesting rock! & interesting about the slag hypothesis not sure butte I found something similar see if I can find the pic in the archives or I'll take another stay tuned... I just took the pic I found this roller in front of an old closed rock shop by the Superstition Mountains The core rock is heavy and dense I figure heavy silicified quartzite Bigger than a softball Cantaloupe size just about No idea what the green is Cutting it or sphereing was a plan….

I was under the impression that Slag would feel similar to Obisdian in texture, that is what is really throwing me off on this one, cause it feels like stone or rock, just really really green. Tho, I did seem to find a bunch of it in the same place about 2 feet maybe 2.5 feet deep in the ground. So, I mean it could be slag. Just not sure. At any Rate I put up a Trail Marker right by where I found it and im goin back to look for more cause I really like green rocks, and well "Winter is coming" and I want to have Plenty of Rocks on hand to last me till warm weather returns late next spring. So I am gettin in all the rock hunting trips I can until its too cold.

I mean there could have been a couple hundred years ago I guess but if so there is NOTHING at all left to suggest it was ever there.

yeah I think the slag theory is a long shot
is that rock heavy and dense for it size?
is it scrtch resistant?
I'd like to know what type it is also cause I think mine is similar and I haven't really got a good clue ...

Honestly, It looks an Awful lot like Nephrite From the photos I found on google. I just have a really hard time believing I found green Nephrite jade in Ohio no matter how much it looks like it lol.

At any rate I send the Photos in to the Ohio DNR Geological Survay link where they have a Geologist look at it and try to Identify it. Hopefully Ill get an answer to what it is for sure that way.

Will a steel knife blade scratch it if you use a decent amount of force? The green part, not the quartz looking part. If so could be serpentine. Also if you chip off a small piece and it's jade or serpentine the break will not look conchoidal like agate or jasper would. Definitely doesn't look like Jadeite or Nephrite to me, never seen it with pits like that.

Honestly I just googled mint green rock and that popped up, just a guess, but No it doesnt scratch with a knife Blade(1095 Carbon Steel Knife).

Spilite, greenstone, or some other metavolcanic rock. Check out images of Catoctin basalt for comparison. Checked Photos and Honestly, it could be any of them..I looks Similar to all of them so I guess I wait on the geologist lol Thanks for the input and Being that it IS Ohio you are likely right on it being Catoctin basalt. I mean jade is found in Ohio but I highly doubt im that lucky lol
