Still relatively new to the hobby, and I use only 6lb barrels. Have seen some throwaway comments here and there about slight adjustments/changes people make when using 6lb and 12lb barrels (vs. the "standard" 3 lb barrel) but so far I haven't seen a thread/article that specifically lays out what these adjustments should be. Was hoping to nail down some specifics - i.e. coarser grit? less grit per pound of rock? More grit? Less time? More time? Any other "unique" issues when using larger barrels?
Thanks!

You end up with more rocks to polish, the only difference I seen from 3 lb tumblers.

I would say you can use coarser grit if you want. Anything more coarse than 60/90 might not break down in a 3lb barrel. But I've seen people say that in pretty much any bigger barrel you can use as coarse of a grit as you want and it'll break down no problem. You can also use more grit. In my 3lb, I put 3 Tbsp of 60/90; anything more and there is usually still some left after a week. In my 6lb I've experimented a bit with anywhere from 6 Tbsp to 18 Tbsp and even with the higher amount of grit, it would all break down. But I didn't notice a significant increase in work done. After playing around with it a bit I settled on 10 Tbsp.

Greetings and Welcome to RTH Forums from Bonnybridge, Scotland. Maybe you need to look at my Aussie Lapidary Forum: Rotary Tumbling Guide see my signature. As I in does tries!Where can someone find your guide and what's the cost. When I bought my first grit kit from New Mexico it had a chart of grit amounts on the roteary tumbling instructions paper. The chart reads 3#=5Tbsp 4.5#=8Tbsp 6#=10Tbsp 12#=20Tbsp and 15#=25Tbsp for ALL grits. I see members say they use WAY less grit. It also says to keep your rocks wet at all times, DO NOT let them dry out for even a short period of time. I now know if it's 60/90 or 120/220 as long as they are washed really good it's not an issue. It also says tontumble each stage for a week, I laugh at that one because I have rutilated quartz thats been in since 1st of May. Seen other members that tumble for months too. Would be interested in your guide. nursetumbler
