Lab grown synthetic quartz or optical glass would be good as a backer. Clear natural optical quartz would also work.

Vanilla-gorilla, make sure that no air bubble exist after epoxy bonding the two surfaces together. You can then shape the top or leave flat. A vibe polish will work great on the quartz but may undercut the slice(backside) since it looks porous.
