I know you cant use coarse grit below 120/220 in a vibe tumbler, My question is why? I dont own a vibe, but I am curious as to why you cant do stage 1 grit in a vibe tumbler?

Note the date of the post from this thread - forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/81096/grit-choice-vibratory-tumbler Most vibratory tumblers don't do well with 80 grit. It is too coarse and tends to shorten the life of the bowl. 120/220 ungraded would be about the coarsest grit I know of anyone here using. Being unfamiliar with what you are buying I'd say wait and see what the instructions recommend. Most of us rough tumble (80 grit or coarser) in a rotary tumbler then move to the vibe. Very little water is used in a vibe. Only enough to make the rocks wet so grit will stick.

It chews up the barrel is the primary reason, I start with graded 220 in ours.

The instructions on my, newly acquired, vibe list using 80 grit for it's step one; However, I'm going to stick to you all's opinion and do that in my rotary.

Raytech promotes using their vibes for all stages but they also recommend washing and reloading grit every 12 hours.

The instructions on my, newly acquired, vibe list using 80 grit for it's step one; However, I'm going to stick to you all's opinion and do that in my rotary. And shampoo bottles have instructions that say, "Rinse and repeat!" - Why? So you use up their product faster and have to buy another bottle faster than is really necessary. I think it's the same with instructions saying to use 80 grit in the vibe bowl...so you wear out the bowl faster and have to replace it sooner than would be necessary. Of course, I always think corporate America is out to stick it to all of us by doing stuff like this right here.
