Sagenite. Looks a lot like some of the Saddle Rim sagenite from the Graveyard Point area in E. Oregon.

Thanks y'all! realrockhound: I found the piece not far from the area in eastern Oregon/Idaho border (Im not sure which road for sure as my record keeping got sketchy LOL) that gemfeller mentioned. I'll have to look up saddle rim specifically to get more info. The whole piece is about the size of a 1.5 golf balls. I appreciate everyone's input and feedback!

Well I tried looking for "saddle rim" on map, where the heck is it? It's not too far from Homedale, ID. It's part of the huge Graveyard Point collecting area on the Idaho/Oregon border and extends well into Malheur County OR. I've collected at the Saddle Rim site (now under claim) but couldn't pinpoint it on a map. Lots of country out there, winding roads and confusing terrain. The first slab I ever bought was Saddle Rim and I still have it. It comes in many types but much is too dark to show the sagenite needles well when cabbed. This is a Saddle Rim cab I made long ago as a doublet, using a mirror as the base to get more light to the sprays of needles.

Some of the old literature that I read decades ago, referred to Sagenite as Deer Hair Agate Sagenite is one of my favorite stones to find at the beach.

amygdule I think she meant that name is associated specifically with the Saddle Rim material. It's probably used with other sagenites as well but the dark random needles in SR do resemble deer hair. The word "saagenite" comes from the Latin word "sagena," meaning a large net. It refers to any material encasing long crystals including rutilated quartz and other stones. RQ is sometimes called "Angel Hair Quartz" and probably other descriptive names.
