Should I use ceramic beads to tumble rocks, or am i ok using a variety of smaller rocks as in this picture?

A lot of people use "smalls" - as in small rocks - rather than ceramic or plastic media.

portlandglydeI live in Michigan and have beaches that I can get as many beach pebbles as I need, all different sizes. Sometimes you even get a surprise outcome of the pebbles. Thinking of tumbling a full barrel of just beach pebbles. Best part of beach pebbles is they're free. 🙃

Should I use ceramic beads to tumble rocks, or am i ok using a variety of smaller rocks as in this picture? Honestly, and I might go SLIGHTLY against the grain when I say this. It depends on WHAT you are tumbling as far as what I would personally use for media. A good Example of this, Obsidian, It has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6, I would NOT use Cermaic or Pea Gravel with it, Because they are both very likely HARDER than the Obsidian, I would instead use Marbles or the glass vase filler beads you can get at wal mart for 98 cents. But when you get to Stones like Jasper or Agate, Pea gravel or ceramic either one will work, Boils down to can you afford to buy cermaic to grind it away to nothing over time, or do you want to save some money go to a beach and collect a bunch of Pea gravel or small beach rocks? I try to match my Media to the hardness of what I am going to tumble or have my media slightly softer than what I am tumbling. But I am also a Noob so I could be way off on this.
