So I went ahead and purchased this vibratory tumbler (smaller one) and since the noise level has it relegated to the back of my truck inside the shell with a 5 gallon bucket over it, I was wondering if the smaller bowl from a Thumbler’s Vib tumbler would fit this base? I’m thinking it might (?) lessen the noise level. Any thoughts?

Hmm never thought of that. Wonder if the shape of the base and the length of the shaft would match the Tumbler's mini bowl. If one would have a Tumbler mini bowl handy, that would be interesting to experiment?

The bases look very similar in pictures but hands on is the best.

The UV mini bowl should work with no issues.

To dampen noise I put two bubble mailers between lid and top of base, it's surprising how much noise that reduces! I find the 5 gallon bucked intriguing... can you insulate the inside while still leaving room for heat to escape?

The instructions I saw on this YouTube video from Ryman/Raytech tell me to fasten the lid on very tight until the rubber bulges (I do this with BOTH rubber nuts) if you don't do this the noise increases significantly.
As the right honourable poster above me has alluded to, the lid can cause the noise.

Well, I took the plunge and am running a Thumbler’s mini bowl in my Ray-Tech 5. One thing I noticed right away was the tumbling action is amazingly better. Probably due to bowl shape (?). I have one concern, I had to add some extra media so I’m hoping the extra weight doesn’t cause issues. If all runs well I think I get another bowl and run those instead of the Ray-Tech bowls. And, yes, I realize I just voided their warranty.

I've been using the UV-10 mini bowls on my TV-5 for about 6 months now. The action is definitely a lot better. I'd actually say the action is a little too good. I make sure the bowl is stuffed full and add some extra borax to help slow it down or it tends to bruise the rocks a bit. I haven't tried adding sugar to slow it down yet but I may try that soon. Overall I'd say the mini bowl is a big upgrade from the raytech bowls if you don't mind spending the extra money.

I wanted to update on my experiment of using a Thumbler’s UV-10 mini bowl on a smaller Ray-Tech base. It is working great. The shine I got on my last batch was amazing. The tumbling action is fine and the Ray-Tech is having no issues with the Thumbler’s bowl. I have a working vibrating tumbler!! I ordered another bowl (Kingsley North) to use for polish only. So this an option for others wanting to get into vibratory tumbling since the other companies vib tumblers are at present out of stock.

Hey Vickster! I wanted to let you know I copied your experiment, and I'm extremely pleased. I did have trouble with one of the motors going but I think it's because I put the larger UV Barrel on the TV 5 Base. Ship me out a new one free of charge. I would love to hear any new tips you have regarding the modified tv/uv tumbler!
