The first pic looks exactly like the palm bog material from the Kramer area.

The first pic looks exactly like the palm bog material from the Kramer area. Alright I'm probably going to go with palm bog then since it makes more sense. Albeit Sagenite isn't too far away since I'm close to horse canyon. What exactly is Palm Bog though? I haven't gotten a good explanation for what it is.

My understanding is palm bog is a kind of one size fits all term for petrified material that includes palm wood, palm root, palm rootlets, cattails, and any other plant type matter that was growing adjacent to these marshy areas and kind of all got mixed together like a soup when it was covered with the volcanic ash that provided the silica and the pressure to replace it with the agate. 1dave is this in the ball park of explanation?

quartzilla - that's a pretty good definition. One more thing you can find in them is fossilized snail shells. I've also collected some palm bog in the Indian Pass area of the Picacho Recreation area in south east California. I have two old threads you may enjoy. The first link is a trip out to Ocotillo Wells State Recreational Vehicle Area (OWSRVA). It's about our favorite place in the desert, and close to home. It's one of the few areas in our local desert that allows camping without haveing to pay a fee - like at Glamis. It is a recreational vehicle area, so green stickered vehicles abound. They also have an extensive road sysytem, most places you do not even need 4 WD. Ocotillo Wells SVRA Map of the area You can download a map from this page. If you go, you can pick up a printed one at the ranger station. Rules - you are not supposed to take any animals, plant or rocks. Some rangers strictly enforce this, while others don't make it a priority. We've even had some say, just don't take the whole desert! (speaking of rocks only, we do not take plants or animals.) First part of trip Recent desert trip - PIC HEAVYSecond half of trip, Indian Pass Road 52.7lb palm bog from Indian Pass with 4" wet grindSorry about what PB did to the photos, marking them up with a watermark of their name. Photos on the other link were replaced with photos on my Flickr account. These threads are from 2014 and 2015. Enjoy, feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for the link rockpickerforever. I have already read some of it going back in time on here. I’d love to go to the Indian Pass area. Sounds like a great place to collect. The closest I’ve been to is is hunting around Midway Well many years ago trying to locate the Gold Basin geode beds, which we never did.

" rockpickerforever" Thank you!! That looks like some amazing material out there! I like how it comes out in my little area, the orange gets to be really bright sometimes! I’ll have to post some more of my favorite pieces especially when they’re polished and cut

I have so many photos from collecting rocks, when I get a minute, I can go thru the folders and post a few of the palm bog from Indian Pass area. The majority of mine have not been worked. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What can I say? I am lazy!

Looks very much like Gem Hill palm bog from near Rosamund, CA. It is full of little palm rootlets and often had nice oranges and greens too. There is palm at Horse Canyon too.

Yes I am very very close to horse canyon, probably a 15 minute drive for me to get to the agate beds! The only issue is getting permission . Luckily I have plenty of other spots nearby to get awesome finds from

Don't have much time this morning, here's just a few I grabbed. Will hunt up some more later. Fossil snail in agate from Indian Pass area. More with small snail shells Larger image And a couple more photos. The funny thing is, I did not see these shells as I cut the rock into slabs, I saw them months later when I was cleaning up! More later.

Wow, those snails are really cool. Look like freshwater bog species to me which would make sense if palm bog is around too.

Wow, those snails are really cool. Look like freshwater bog species to me which would make sense if palm bog is around too. Thanks, Mel. Yep, plenty of petrified palm bog in the area. This is from off of Indian Pass Road, off of Ogilby Rd., north of I-8. I'll be going through more old photos in my computer, and possibly going through the rocks from there, maybe taking more photos, and posting them as time allows. South of this area, I have found turritella shells. Not goniosoma, as those are marine! At some time in the past, this area was covered by a freshwater lake, replete with the usual lacustrine deposits. Also alluvial deposits from rivers. Many fossilized critters to be found.

Wow! Those are so amazing, I didn't know we had fossil snails of that quality around here. Makes me want to look around even more to see if they'll be in my are as well I'll post my favorite pieces in a separate post so they get the spotlight that they deserve.

Rockpicker: Interesting. Sounds like your area was an environment similar to the " Turritella" Actually Goniobasis tenera agatized freshwater snail deposit out at Wamsutter, WY. We have actual saltwater Turritella sp. snail deposits here in Texas but unfortunately, though the snails are sometimes agatized, the matrix is limestone and rather blah.
