Ha!! Speaking of rocks, I am dumber than a box of rocks! They wouldn't have me. The only business I have with the U of M is watching the football games on Saturdays. I use to go to some games as well but I am over that scene now. That sounds liks a slight insult to the box of rocks :-) :-) Lolololololololololololololol

electrocutusFantastic batch. I like my tumbles well shaped too. Thanks for showing. I’ve never tried sodalite. Your batch makes me want to give it a shot.

This the a batch of serpentine just ordered electrocutus. It was in bigger chunks. The tile saw cut thru it like butter. Check it out brybry. Not expecting any high polish.

I was able to coax a pretty good shine, not glass shine, but better than matte.

electrocutus This tumble may be messy like your sodalite was - lots of slurry and and slow-to-no grit breakdown. SiC is so extremely hard at Mohs 9 that it will probably will not breakdown with such soft rocks like sodalite and serpentine.(like tumbling soap !) This is one reason why it doesn't take much SiC when tumbling super soft rocks. You can recapture the same (heavier) SiC from the slurry each cleanout by separation and keep reusing it again and again. Tumbling glass does much the same thing. The coarse SiC breaks down slowly because the glass is Mohs 5 and the SiC is Mohs +9. And quartz/agate/jasper/pet wood is usually Mohs 7 and beats the SiC up much quicker. brybry Guessing this will be a fast tumble. Please post your serpentine project and I will mine. That seller flat packed the MFRB to the hilt. I had to toss a few chunks but most was good rock. nursetumbler Very interesting. I would like to see your results. I tried a dry tumble on solid bamboo roots one time and got nice results but never could master rocks. Thanks for the reference, may have to give that a try.

brybryIs all serpentine colorful like that? From what I've seen, it can vary from from yellowish green to darker shades. Quality can vary too.

Those are beauties nursetumbler. Guessing they did not take long in step 1 to shape. And you got a nice polish but I think you mentioned you dry tumbled these. The edges don't appear frosted either. I just started the serpentine an hour ago.

I dry tumbled for 2-3 weeks because I didn't need the barrel (at that time I had 1 barrel for each grit) i want to tumble fluorite then dry polish it to see if I can coax a nice shine.

Actually my sodalite tumble went really well. It's my "I-thought-it-was-lemon-quartz" tumble that was so messy, and that turned out to be either calcite or some other soft yellowish rock. :-) Speaking of tumbling glass, I have some bottles with reallay thick bottoms that I want to break into chunks to make some nice rounded frosted pieces for decoration. Would you suggest I start with a short 60/90 tumble to shape them, or should I start straight with 280 SiC?

Sorry for the jack. Heck no, roll that glass and shape it with 60/90. It does not shape overnight !(I get out the big guns and shape with SiC 30 or even 16 and 8 ! remind me, do you have a vibe and if so which one ?(better to finish glass in a vibe, preferably the soft fingered Lot-O).

Leaving the rock licking alone ! I went to engineering college next to a nursing college and won't soon forget the nurses ! Fluorite may surprise you. Certain colors tumble better go figure. Some colors frost too. I did a few pieces in a batch of wet tumbles in the vibe, the two on the left:

Thanks jamesp , I only have rotary. I started with the Dr.Cool """PRO""" (their name, not mine :-) ) and now I also have a Lortone 33B. The Dr. Cool is suprisingly better that it first looks. Its main issue is that it rotates too fast for the pre-polish or polish stages, but for the first 60/90 stage it grinds down rocks faster than the Lortone, so it's pretty good for that.
