You're very right Robin , hummingbirdstones , I just used my cabber to contain the mess. But for the life of me I can't find the post I had done about my carving station.
But the photo is self explanatory.
I purchased this from KN north (other people sell it as well), and I adapted it to use with my cabber, but it is a stand alone clamp for a flex shaft handpiece that just clamps on the edge of a table.
They also sell a cheaper thing that could be used with a vise or a clamp. These are both made to hold a standard Foredom type handpiece, so YMMV, depending on what you want to clamp in it.
Of course you don't have to have an of this to carve something- it just makes it a little easier as you can use both hands on the stone.

Thank you!! I do need some kind of clamp so this looks like it would work well. so much for thinking i'd just sit down and carve haha! I want to enjoy this so I want it to be as "easy" as possible.

rocknewb101 I learned carving freehand without the handpiece clamp, it's more versatile to see what you're doing, but for better control clamping stuff down is definitely good. If you have a drill and hole saws it's easy to make from scrap wood and a couple bolts, I may try one tonight if I get off my butt and get moving. I might try a clamp for dopped rocks too, that may also be a good carving option. As far as spray shields and the like, in a couple weeks on the day after election day if your area is anything like mine there will be literal tons of corrugated plastic signs out there for the grabbing that will work great for water shielding and a plethora of uses. I'll harvest a few myself, campaign workers will be grateful.

hummingbirdstones all I get is the etsy home page. The Lebowski/Sobchack 24 shirts are interesting though, but we'll leave that for somewhere else...

Do I have to use diamond paste for polishing with a dremel? Any way to make a paste out of the polishing powder I have for tumbling? I'm starting my carving today (glorious 77 degree day in NE Ohio) and wondering if I need to make a quick order for the diamond...thanks

Diamond is faster (or so I've read), but I've also read of many old timers using 220 SIC graded grit.
For polishing recently, I used diamond paste with hard felt buffs. Just in case you don't know, you have to use a different buff or wheel for each grit. But carving / grinding is first - that's the fun part
So have fun today, Patty

You can probably use your polishing powder for the final polish. Make a slurry (add water until it is a thin paste consistency) and polish with a felt buff or something similar.

A mentor of mine for faceting things came up with this and I thought it was pretty slick, it addressed all (well, most) of the carving annoyances I've experienced. Gratefully, he's shared it on his website - worth a look for sure! www.hashnustones.com/carving-station.html

So have fun today, Patty THank you so much! I did go ahead and ordered some diamond paste and cerium oxide. I also found a set of the differently tapered felt buffs. Was maybe a little unprepared yesterday, but still had fun

Hubby and I were going through the different suggestions made earlier in the thread trying to piece things together so this is also very helpful! Thank you for sharing!!

When you get going you should post pictures of your progress Patty I shared my green opal last night under a new thread. Was focusing on getting the feel of the dremel and how the different burrs etc work. I think it turned out pretty good. Worked on rounding on some agates, but they take a bit more time lol...
