You don't have to use diamond; it's just the easiest. You can probably use your polishing powder for the final polish. Make a slurry (add water until it is a thin paste consistency) and polish with a felt buff or something similar.

Thanks! I went ahead and ordered some anyways - it's not very expensive. I tried the regular polish on a green opal and it seemed to do ok.
