So, me & Great Wolf Lodge have parted ways involuntarily. I'm quite miffed on getting screwed over on that one but it is now the past.
Went to an interview today at a local place. Talked to the owner and landed a new job. Starting pay is a few bucks less than what I left GWL at BUT it's 10 miles from the house. Due to my experience in managing multiple kitchens, the owner made sure I understood it was starting pay. Only 2 things on the menu is premade. 98% is scratch made and the veg & salad mix comes from a local farm. Farm to table baby!
First time I've been excited to be in a kitchen in a long time. And I work 3 1/2 days a week, average 40 - 45 hrs a week.

Bummer things didn't work out with GWL...but from the sounds of things in the past, it was a matter of time. I just figured it would have been on your terms. I'm super stoked to hear you were able to get your foot in the new door as quickly as you did...and the hours sound spectacular for you!!

Yeah, was tinkering with my resume a few times. It's gotten so Stoopid with trying to be "Super Woke" they have no idea how to control it. We were supposed to learn everyone's pronouns, can't say or do ANYTHING that may have a possibility of upsetting or offending someone. It's to the point all you have to do is claim you heard someone say or do something offensive and boom, out the door. If you said it or did it is besides the point.
As soon as I walked in the dining room at the new place, I knew I was home. It has that cozy, homey you want to be there feel to it. The fact the owner does farm to table and I'm 10 miles from work instead of 32 miles is a bonus.

Sometimes I think we have to reach a point of intolerance to be pushed to something better. Sounds like you found better, and sounds like you will have lots of days off for rock hobbies!

GWL is actually international now. Built/building one outside of London and working on one in Mexico. The company itself isn't bad, the ones they hire to run them can suck tho. There is A LOT I won't miss.
I was getting excited during the interview. My buddy that set up the meeting suggested learning every station and position and working my way up to becoming kitchen manager. Right now the owner does pretty much everything. If he can let go of a few things when the time is right, I can make his life a little easier while helping myself.

There’s a show called “Chefs Table” which I think is really nicely and artistically done. The newest season is all on pizza and the first episode is about a guy in Phoenix who creates pizzas from all local ingredients. He started out doing everything himself and held onto it that way for a long time but eventually just had to be willing to take on help. I think if you can become trusted then you’ll always have value. Hopefully we’ll find ourselves in Arizona some day and can try his pizza!

I think i know who you are talking about. He worked with different flour blends for his dough. If it us who I'm thinking of, he had to let go because he developed a lung problem from all the flour dust he breathed in. Similar to black lung in coal miners.

I think so. Got enough time off to get caught up around the house and get some side gigs going if I want.
Going to be fun doing scratch made again. 😁

brybry I think you will do well, you definitely have the determination as I recall. Too bad for GW, their loss. Bet they're feeling it already. My brother did the cook to executive chef in his career, and when he had enough he did catering and also designed commercial kitchens for people. There are so many possibilities in the culinary industry, none of them beyond your reach if that's what you want to do.

Boxes, bags, buckets and cans seems to be the new wave tho. From what I've heard, GW is a free for all s@ t show already.

Looking forward to leaving but until then, this is where I go to be pissed off allllllll the time. Thankfully just 4 days a week. In other news, the head Chef from GW landed a new gig at the convention center in Columbus and is bringing me on part time until he can Guarantee 40 hrs a week or I land a single ft gig that actually pays my bills. I have applied to a couple places but haven't heard back yet. Yay me!

Sooooooo, got a new job today. 2nd shift, $15 an HR but after 7-14 days or when my supervisor is ok with my performance, unlimited OT. I'm so used to 55-60 HR weeks that I'm OK with it. Between the other job & the PT job I was waiting on, was going to pull those hours anyway. Best part, benefits at 30 days. $20-25 a week for me & the wife, only pay for medical. Dental, eye & prescription are free. $5 copays & $5 scripts.
Less an hour but the bennies out weigh that and its starting pay. Going through a temp service to start and if I do well, can go full time with the company after 60-90 days. Will be making pre built parts for Kia. Warehouse jobs were already filled up.
