This one is giving me some trouble. Thought it would be easy but spent way more time than I planned on it. First, the colors only go so deep so I need a pretty shallow dome. Secondly I just can't seem to get a shine on parts of it. The brown must be a little softer maybe? For those that have worked this before, any tips? I know the picture looks decent but the right side is a little dull in the light. And... I'm sure this is obvious to a lot of people here... But would appreciate a chime in on the type of rock :-) This came from a mix box from roy and pretty sure the only piece I have like it. Thanks!

Looks Moroccan to me.
You might try spending more time on the finer grits, with lighter pressure, to see if that helps the shine on that part.

Yeah, Moroccan seam agate. As I recall, some of the brown didn't polish that well. Yours looks awesome!

Actually agatewhisperer, the sides not being quite as shiny only makes the flames pop more. I'd leave it, looks great A nice camp fire indeed.

My first thought when it popped up was Moroccan agate. Also, the undercutting sounds right, I’ve polished a few pieces (different color) and I’ve had the same issues on the unsilicified (?) sections of the cab.
Beautiful stone and beautiful work! I like patty’s mentality, I’ve never thought that way before, but I believe that’s how I’m going to start thinking when it comes to stuff like this.

Alex, this cab looks so amazing as is. I know what you're saying about "wanting" that perfect finish...but as others are stating, parts of that one just won't polish like the others. I too have to agree with Patty about the outer areas highlighting the inner "fire". Seriously...it looks fantastic!!

I know where the scratches are and it's hard not to see when I look at it. The other thing not shown is that the dome is pretty low but the thickness is really thick! Not exactly sure what I'm going to do with it. I was going to also dome the back side but might just leave it because I wouldn't want something to go wrong and ruin the front...

I have yet to do a double dome. If this one is as thick as you're saying, a double dome would be pretty cool! Or, you could do a five-wire wrap which would take up the space on the thick girdle. (Or, a four-wire wrap that's weaved...)

(Or, a four-wire wrap that's weaved...) The ole five wire wrap trick. Ya it's pretty thick. I have the line drawn for the second dome but just letting it chill on the dop stick for a while so I can take a break from it. Time might take care of a few of the scratches 😀

That is a dang nice looking cab. Is that a specific type of material?

Moroccan seam, maybe apple valley agate? I think you’re right on the Moroccan seam. I found a pic that’s dead ringer.

I just pulled the double dome trick on this stone because I cut it so thick. I cut the thicker dome, grooved the perimeter for minimalist wire wrap then pulled a shallow dome on the back side to make the pendant reversible. You can do it, the dop will hold on the dome and they look pretty cool.

Beautiful cab. It'll be great as a groove wrap, reversible, 2 in 1. I hope you post when it's wrapped!
