I'm looking for a good fit for my brother and I. Lots of opportunities. Do you volunteer anywhere? What do you do and has it worked out well for you? Thanks!

That is how I started in medicine 44 years ago. Started volunteering at the hospital, Took and passed the State EMT exam at the age of 15, and even though I could not be certified at that age I was allowed to work in the ER as an EMT. Learned lab and phlebotomy at 16 and EKG at 18. I enjoyed working in the ER and ambulance the most, but way to much stupidity and corruption in allopathic medicine so left it after 13 years and went in to holistic medicine instead, where I have been ever since.

Impressive! I held other titles during that time as well such as medical assistant, certified nursing assistant an operating room technician . Everywhere I went I asked them to teach me everything they could, which opened up other doors. Was not my main love in life though. I always wanted to be a marine biologist since I was very young and my main area of interest since 6th grade was sharks. Unfortunately as I was getting out of high school the Navy had just cut shark research funding assuming we had learned everything we could learn. And that was the funding for most jobs in the field of shark research at the time. So I decided to stay with medicine even though it was more of a hobby and continue my shark studies independently.

Kept the mind very active since no trauma was ever the same. Especially loved working on the ambulance, especially since it was here in Las Vegas. We always got some really weird stuff.

I have done lots of volunteering. I really liked being a 4-H leader. Other things I have done are: Local Historical Research Center, museum, water quality monitoring, local theater group, local Veteran's Home, Animal Shelter and Opera House.
The biggest drawback I have experienced is when long time volunteers don't want new people to volunteer.
Is there something specific your brother and you are both interested in?

I knew you did a lot, I just didn't know what. I think you forgot weather spotter.
I'm not too sure, but I have a background in education. I think I would like to work with troubled teens. Talked to my brother about it today. His time is more limited. Not sure that we can both do the same thing.

Bow about being a volunteer tutor. Big need for this right now with the covid lock downs putting a lot of children way behind in learning.

I volunteer at my local Humane Society in the dog shelter every week. I love dogs of all breeds, so it feels like they are doing me a favour by letting me help more than the other way around :-)

I go to an old folks "retirement center" every Wednesday and Sunday evening to spend an hour visiting with the lonely. It's shameful how so many old people need someone to fill in for what their negligent families ought to be doing. I consider it to be my honor and privilege to serve them, and I certainly benefit more than they do. It's so easy, all I have to do is listen and tell stories, or maybe hold someone's hand.

She now has a job working doggie daycare.

My wife and I are Repair Cafe volunteers. Our Repair Cafes are organized and run by our local Washington State University county extension.
The overriding principle is to keep stuff out of landfills (and assist people who are unable or unable to pay for repairs)
People bring in a variety of things that can't repair or can't afford to have repaired. My wife handles sewing and sewing-related repairs. I am nominally the guy for jewelry repairs, but being a generalist I find myself repairing just about anything. Our in-person events now include a remote repair option: if the repair is too complex or time consuming for the actual event, we sometimes take items home to fix in our spare time.
The time commitment is really minimal and it's very enjoyable. We especially enjoy doing repairs when the owner is watching and involved — sometimes they have great suggestions! The last thing that I repaired was a kitchen cabinet door. The narrow part that is screwed to the cabinet frame had shattered into 6 pieces. It was quite the gluing and clamping puzzle!

I have been volunteering at the food bank in our little community, was there this morning. I like what Gary does. The rebuilding Center in Portland was a model for not only generating reusable materials like the Habitat re-stores, they also offer classes to teach people to repurpose things in creative ways, don't know if you have anything like that where you are, but if so supporting them can also gain you skills that help you at home.
