So I've been going through some old stock of cabs that I have - they're good for practicing wire wrapping, etc.
And it's always puzzled me- why are Indian Cabs hollow in the back .
Note they are also completely polished ft & back
Inquiring minds want to know how/why they do this ? I'm thinking some kind of a jig ? But maybe someone knows for sure.

Maybe lparker knows ? As I've seen you sell cabs from Indian in bulk, but maybe it's just certain suppliers ?? Patty

My understanding is that original worry stones or Indian cabochons were created that way from being tumbled. Natives would collect them and use them for healing properties. I used to have some legit ones my grandpa gave me. I know they are stashed away somewhere.

Not so sure -I mean I'm pretty sure they are likely tumbled as they are all rounded, but it's the depression in the back that has me curious, it's pretty pronounced.
That depression would have to have been ground in the stone before tumbling.
Also, at most, these cabs are maybe 10 years old- so not anything collectable.
Patty ... still curious

As far as man made one’s, I couldn’t tell you how they are made. But for the ones natives used to collect I’d be willing to bet they formed very similar to hag stones. But the stone never wore all the way through. Obviously that’s only speculation just from stuff I’ve looked up. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worry_stone This wiki talks a bit about it.

How very interesting realrockhound , guess I shouldn't have been too quick to discount what you were saying the first time I wonder if the supplier I got them from years ago just marketed them both ways, as worry stones &/or as cabs. I would say the photo on the Wiki the depression looks deeper yet than mine, but I'm sure that could vary? I do still wonder how they make them like that - tumbled we agree, but how do they grind the depression ? I'm sure there's a 3 year old in Indian (if some of those you tube videos are believable) that's making them right now.
THANK YOU for the link and further info,
Patty

I can't say anything to this. All the cabs I get are fairly fresh off the wheels and tumblers.

Maybe the idea is to have the dome and to keep them thinner for weight and/or transparency? Just guessing, but after the other thread with cabs that have concave features it's definitely something I want to try
