You're right of course jasoninsd, with a backing plate & bezel or even prongs it would be protected. I was thinking of simply done earrings, as I did not know realrockhound was a jeweler as well. Patty

realrockhound if the prineville club is NW Federation affiliated you should join, if you haven't already, and get yourself on the list for the NW Rockhound Retreat at camp Hancock next year, Stefan teaches a smithing class old school with affordable tools. Lots of other lapidary related classes too, taught by masters. Of course you may also have another option, but if not you should consider it for the week of Labor Day 2023.

Nice doublet- Can we get to see a side shot as well ? I have to wonder about the pointy top - looks cool, but in use, unless it's really tough, I'd think it could break off. If it was me I'd round the top ever so slightly. It would hang better as an earrings - assuming that's the intention. Patty I’ll post some pics here shortly. So with it being obsidian and a doublet I’ve encountered it’s EXTREMELY hard to get the backing piece flawless in few regards (polish and micro chips) on the edge. So what my plan was for these was to do a double open ended bezel that shows the front and back, but essentially hides the sides and edges. This also accomplishes a few things. Hides imperfections on the sides. Allows you to see sheen on front and the back, and from playing around with it, with different material, limits light exposure from the sides and allows for a better sheen, because the backing is so thin.

Here's the side shot. Keep in mind, when I made this/these (second one is actually 90% done, just needs some touch ups) I was still very much in my infancy when it came to cutting cabochons. I've learned how I would do things different, but yeah... live and learn. Damn... i'm going to cut my nails after I type this liveoak
