It's taken 2 years, but I finally experienced what it's like for enough gas to build up in my barrell for the lid to pop up and leak :-)
I am tumbling some pieces of glass, and I know glass tends to get gas build-up, so I was checking the barrels everyday. I guess I needed to check more often because in the morning I had grey sludge all over under my tumbler on my workbench.
I hope I have learned a lesson from this :-)

Sorry you have a mess to clean up. Maybe when you're tumbling something like glass, burping the barrel before you turn in for the evening would help.

Another thing that would help...not this time of course...is to get one of those inexpensive "boot trays" that you put your muddy shoes in to place your tumbler(s) on. Or...steal some of your wife's old cookie sheets and buy her some new ones. Having the tumblers in some kind of a tray with shallow sides prevents leakage all over the workbench...

I wonder if it would help to put some liquid simethicone in with a glass tumble? I've not tumbled glass, but I used to have some frothing when I checked my tumbler, and I would add simethicone drops to dissipate the gas. They are the infant anti-gas drops OTC.

I actually have both of those in my workshop already :-)

What I do now also is "push up" the bottom of the barrel by putting a round stone underneath and pushing down while closing the lid. It gives a bit more time and space for gas.
