New member here and this is my first official post. My apologies in advance if this is not the correct area to post this type of question in. I did a quick search on this forum but did not get any immediate hits. My daughter and I are somewhat new to rock tumbling as well. In short, the question we have is regarding Stage 1 Grit. We quickly ran through the tumbling grit we got off of Amazon (Poly Plastics 4 stage kit with small ceramics) and we are wanting to grab something close by here in OKC. Question is, Harbor Freight has a 25 lb bag of Black Aluminum Oxide 70 Grit for $44.99. Question is, is it ok to use this particular grit for Stage 1? I now the Poly Plastics Stage 1 we used is a mix of 60/90 Coarse Silicon Carbide Grit and it worked fine (as far as we know anyways). Just wanted to make sure we don't mess up a perfectly good batch of recently hounded rocks. Many thanks in advance for any advice we may receive here.

Hey bigjohn , you might want to take a look at this THIS thread. They get into things pretty in depth. It sounds like it will probably work but might be even slower than using SIC. Welcome to the forum!

Greetings and Welcome from Bonnybridge, Scotland!
Yes Fixed 70 Grit Aluminum Oxide is a ok replacement for F80 (60/90) it's gives an extra day (3.5 days) before breaking and after 5 day it's usually fully broken in a 3lb barrel or larger depending on the hardness of the material you are tumbling so you might want clean-out every 5 days instead of every 7 days, also once Aluminum Oxide grit is fully broken it acts as a polish.

Very much appreciated for the replies and info. I figure I'll give it a test run in one of the 3lb barrels. Take care all.
