Howdy gang, my name is Mike, I got into rockhounding over the pandemic, and over the last few years I've hunted most of the locations you find in the popular books and few other secret ones I've found! I'm always looking for new spots, and willing to trade locations, or even just tag along. I try to get out there every other week, I find it clears my head and helps me get my life priorities in order. Thanks for having me, lets find cool stuff! -Mike

I live in Ohio, but will be in Los Angeles in January. Looking to find somewhere for my maiden rockhound experience - I know California is a huge state, wonder if you have a suggestion for the LA area? Thoughts on Santa Monica mountains vs. Palos Verdes coastline? We'd make a day trip out of it. Thanks!!

Hi mike9000 welcome from Central California. What part of the state are you in? I'm in LA but I get up to central coast here and there. I'm especially interested in the Nipomo Marcasite you have up in your area, but I've never been able to find any and haven't found any info in books about it. Have you ever come across any?

Looking to find somewhere for my maiden rockhound experience - I know California is a huge state, wonder if you have a suggestion for the LA area? Thoughts on Santa Monica mountains vs. Palos Verdes coastline? We'd make a day trip out of it. Thanks!! Sure. So it all depends on what sort of experience you are looking for. If you are looking for a variety of minerals or an adventurous hike, or an easy hike with the rocks right at your feet. I always suggest Afton Canyon for fir time rockhounds- huge variety of desert minerals (agate, jasper, common opal, fluorite, calcite) all packed into amazing desert canyon vistas. However the location is about 3 hours away from LA. If you want something where the minerals are at your feet when you park, check out gem hill for green common opal, golden honey agate and bloodstone. That's a little closer only about an hour and a half ride. Santa Monica mountains has an abundance of white agate which is only about 30 min drive. Palos Verdes coast line has spots like gaviota beach for fossils, San Simeon Creek and moonstone beach for some interesting jasper, agate, and the rare piece of labradorite.
