nice nice nice.. I tried malachite before... I was not nearly as successful as you... Thank you SO much! Can I ask what you were having trouble with when working the Malachite?

Love those lines and cab shapes, Jason. Great job! I’ve always been drawn to Malachite as well, cause I’m a green rock type of guy I guess. The ghost stone in the end was pretty cool too! I had to laugh as you skillfully side-stepped the comment about wearing a mask, but I did find a possible one for you for the future, which stays in line with your last photo. The knife is optional.

Thanks Mark! Even before I plunged down the rabbit hole of lapidary, I remember seeing Malachite...and same as you...it's fascinated me right from the start! For the most part, I've mastered the art of the "dodge"...but every once in awhile I get nailed on it! LOL

Nice cabs jasoninsd . I've always considered malachite one of the easier stones to cut and polish. Guess it depends on one's individual technique. Must be some vibration or the blade's too aggressive in your tile saw to cause the shattering. Never had a problem slabbing or trimming it -- slow and easy, of course. Those will mount up beautifully.

As far as the trim saw...you nailed it with guessing about the blade. I do believe there's a slight chatter...which doesn't affect most things I'm cutting...but seemed to cause a big issue with the Malachite. It is a "cheap" wet tile saw...so it's not the most precise thing out there...plus I believe it's rotating much faster than a true lapidary trim saw.

With the amount of cutting and wraps you do, Jason, I think it's high time you get yourself a "real" trim saw. It would be so much more pleasant for you. Depending on the slab sizes you normally have, an 8" or 10" should work perfectly.

I should do some research and see what people are recommending for trim saws...

Gotta love copper stuff! Metals are my favorite to cut, nothing more fun for me than grinding through a nice iron or copper incorporated cab. Those turned out great. Machines sure are fun the clean, huh?

Little word of advice, white shirts aren't an intelligent choice. I'm planning to Rust-Oleum coat my machine in the spring to make cleanups easier, but you have factory built trays so that sort of complicates things.

I'm not too good at cutting it to be honest. I did one a couple weeks back for my mom's birthday but don't plan on doing another for a while.

I'm constantly seeing Australian Boulder Opal on eBay...but the pieces are so small, they don't seem like they're worth it... WHAT?? I've seen you in your protective "Dexter" getup when you're working material...but you WON'T wear gloves??? LOL

Hah! All this talk about trouble with malachite--I have a rotational system with cabs--anything I'm not satisfied with (and I'm not picky) goes into a separate plastic cup to be reworked on the next round. My first and only malachite cab has won the award for the most appearances in the plastic cup. One part will be perfect, then it will promptly fall off.
But back to the matter at hand. First time, or 100th time, you did those cabs proud! All of them are quite nice.

There's a pile of cabs accumulating right next to the vise...the ones that didn't make the cut. I'm not too sure I'm going to rework them. LOL

Haha, I will admit my setup is a bit excessive in safety (people at my club don't even wear ear protection unless saws over 10 inches are running) but I'm already deaf enough. One of the reasons why is because I didn't know where the gloves were, and didn't want them to be pulled out of thin air in some closet.

So beautiful cabs! The polish is fantastic bearing in mind how soft is this rock. I have big issues when I try to polish soft stones, even stones harder than this one. Didn't work it yet, but legend says fingers turn green. Is it true?

Didn't work it yet, but legend says fingers turn green. Is it true? Adrian Thank you SO much Adrian! I really didn't do anything differently with these than I do with anything else. I've asked a couple people where they were having trouble when working Malachite, but no one's said what in particular they were having issues. LOL - My fingers weren't completely "Grinch" green when I was finished...but it's one of the only stones I've worked where I had to use a toothbrush to clean the cuticles and underneath the fingernails to get rid of the residue.
