Here in southern Missouri we woke up to -6 F (windchill of -27) this morning, and both my 15 pounders were frozen SOLID. I had to wait to take a photo because the lid liners were frozen to the ice. I should have moved them inside the garage yesterday - oh well, you live and learn! LOL. The Thumler's (red one) is the most frozen solid because it had been going for 6 days. The Rebel (black one) had only been going 1 day, so it was not completely solid. I know some of you live in much colder climates and have bigger winter woes - you can share them here if you want! When frozen solid: Finally thawed enough to open:

I think it was last year, I was running my tumblers in the garage with temps that low. I had a large cardboard box that I put over them to contain the heat. It worked...thankfully they didn't freeze. Sorry you've got some extremely solid slurry there!!

ericabelle It looks like you got some good impact shaping inside the frozen slurry. Winter is getting pretty real in North Idaho. Luckily everything but my slab saw is in the basement.

Sorry you've got some extremely solid slurry there!! That's a great idea! I'll have to try that. I was able to keep the Rebel going since it wasn't quite frozen solid, and I put it in the "john Deere garage" with my vibe for now. The only problem is, I really, really depend on the sound of the tumbling to evaluate how the tumbling action is going and it's hard to hear it next to the vibe. LOL I'll have to move it next week, when the highs are in the high 50's. (Crazy weather)

Nice snow, Starguy ! We got some here, too - three or four inches. Usually we only see ice here; and if we see snow at all, it's in February. What crazy weather we're all having!

Another reason to limit the amount of water in the barrel.....room for expansion in case of freezing...although I'm sure that not exactly what the manufacturer suggests. Hopefully you didn't sustain any damage.
Winter has definitely arrived here in Michigan this morning as well.

(As if we needed another variable in tumbling!) I tend to run my barrels a little dry, though, and I think the larger barrel size helped me out. I was SO nervous about my Thumler's when I discovered the freeze because there was no sound coming from it while it rolled. But no damage done to the barrel. There were a few nicks to rocks, though. That's the slower rolling barrel, so that was my chert/jasper and quartz.

Yeah, it's crazy that today we had a high temp of 9 degrees F, and Thursday we'll have a high of 60 degrees! Everyone is going to get sick....... I hate that Michigan will bear the brunt of it - all those pretty rocks covered with snow and ice! Ugh

I have a wood pellet stove in my basement, about 2 tons of wood pellets, and a nice warm shop! -36 wind chill last night and I was toasty warm as I changed the barrels out. Of course my slab saw is in the garage, but I didn't want to cut slabs anyway lol.

Yeah it's been delightful around here the last few days. I am between Ann Arbor and Jackson. Sucks on your pipes freezing. When it gets that cold it's best to just drain all the water out of the pipes until it warms some. Switch to water jugs inside the heated space. Even 4 weather campers can't hold up to those temps. I have heard of people running water lines inside the heated space to help prevent freezing when spending a lot of time in single digit temps. Not the most convenient thing to do though.

No not really the plan. Couldn't leave first day to beat the storm because we were almost out of propane. Then the water froze because of the storm. Then we lost power so my efforts to thaw the pipes came to a screeching hault. Couldn't start the onboard generator. Couldn't start the Motorhome to get better amps or whatever to be able to start the generator to thaw the pipes. Vicious Vicious Vicious cycle.

They could write a sitcom or a country song about this. 1 problem isn't a big deal. ...2 problems can be worked out, BUT....YOU HAD ALL THE PROBLEMS! Hopefully your luck changes soon. A nice warm up is coming by the end of the week.
