I asked for and received an Optivisor for Christmas. I just went through my "finished" cabs. I thought I had checked them all over with some decent glasses. I can't believe how obvious and large some of the flaws and scratches are. Out of a box of 50 cabs 8 will be getting some more cleaning done. There's 11 others that I don't feel "need" to be reworked. So, about 30 out of the 50 that need some regrinding and polishing. I was pretty stunned how bad some are.

Amazing, isn't it? Don't know what # your lenses are, but they make them in different strengths and can be switched out really easy. If you really want to be depressed, get some of the stronger lenses and then look at your stones.

Actually...I think that was a REALLY thoughtful gift! I truly couldn't do any cabbing without mine!

That is funny. I also got opti-visors for Christmas. My camera has always captured anything I may have missed and I often corrected things after seeing my photos. Hopefully now I can catch a few things a little sooner.

I was really struggling with wrapping because my eyes had gotten so bad. DH went to the hobby store and bought me some optivisors. I had been crying- I was so upset about having to give up my hobby. He surprised me with them and I sat down and did this.

My lens plate is a 5. It's a pretty close focus length. I think I need to order some different lens plates. What number do you guys use for cabbing?

I believe mine is #4. I think it's the most common one.

Has anyone tried the lens plates that are available on eBay? 4 glass lenses 1.5-3.5 for $20 plus shipping. They're a lot cheaper than the branded ones. I'm just wondering if they're any good.

It may depend on your eyesight. I'm nearsighted and I use a #5 Optivisor for most general work including jewelry, but not for checking for scratches. For checking cabs for scratches at the higher grits and fine, detailed work, I often use a #10 Optivisor. But to be certain I also use a 10X loupe to check for scratches. Optivisor lens numbers are often confused with magnification power:

I commonly use Optivisor 3 and 4. I always wear trifocals; they fit nicely under the Optivisor.
For checking cabs, I take the cabs outside in the sunshine and examine them with Optivisor.
Optivisors make jewelry making much easier.

Optivisors make jewelry making much easier. I'm with Pat. I comfortably wear +1.75 reading glasses (Dollar General specials! LOL) under my "Optivisor". Mine isn't an official Optivisor. It's an inexpensive one off eBay that came with four different interchangeable lenses.

I have the LX line of Optivisor brand.
OptiVISOR LX Specs Item No. Focal Length Magnification LX3 14″ 1.75 times LX4 10″ 2 times LX5 8″ 2.5 times LX7 6″ 2.75 times
I also wear 3x readers. Yes, my eyes are that old.

I have these as well, and I'm up to the LX5. I also have "special" prescription glasses that only focus up to eight feet and sometimes use both together. The glasses are made for reading music, but work perfectly well for reading mistakes on cabs.

Wow, very nice. Thank you very much. It's even tinier than the picture suggests and the opal is nicer, too. When I made this, it was the smallest piece to date that I had finished. I gave DH a big ole hug!

rockbrain, my experience is that the cheap ones are fine if they are made of optically ground glass. They have really cheap ones that are all plastic lenses- don't buy those.

Thanks liveoak Patty. I think I'll probably go ahead and get the 4 pack. From the little bit I've used them I think I'm going to want a little less magnification and a longer focal length. I'm using them with 2X readers but have progressive bifocals ordered that will be here soon. A lot of variables at work but I'm thinking less magnification and add the loupe. I'd like to be able to grind while wearing them and then flip down the loupe for examination.
