Thanks for the information. I’m printing the manual —-1972. I like the variable speed feature —- no bothersome belts.

A used drill is a great avenue- glad you have a friend to help out.
I'll agree with Lee, only possible problem is if something fails on it, repair parts will not be available.
So get your friend to not only look at it, but if possible drill even a piece of wood with it just to see how it works.
And then if the price is right go for it. You can always get another one.
Good Luck,
Patty

When I was looking for a small drill press, I ended up getting the drill press for the Foredom. I like it a lot. I searched around for a good price.

Jose checked out John’s drill press. Instructive. Jose concluded: It was very loud —- probably from bearings. It threw sparks and we noticed a burning smell —- probably from brushes. Users manual from 1972. Possible problems replacing parts.
Now I am addressing drill presses that were mentioned in the thread: from riogrande, Grobet from Penn, and the one on Amazon. I’m leaning towards rio and Grobet.
Greatly appreciate your help.

UPDATE: Just unpacked the mini drill press from riogrande.com. susand24224. I bought the one you mentioned. I hope yours is good. The handle with the knob (referred to as a hand spike) does not fit its designated hole. The instructions are….. $;@&/. Amazing English?!! Support line busy. Will try later. Should add it was well-packed😀 Onward….

Sigh...... Rio is pretty good, so if something isn't right, I think it's worth the effort to contact them. Patty

Yes, rio is good. Closed until Monday. The one from Kingsley North looks like rios, but the one review is only two stars. Still checking.
Back to square 1.

Honestly I think all those little drill presses are probably made in the same factory, just different names on them. Having used the exact drill press, I'd not give it a lot of stars, only because it's not very powerful. I'm spoiled, as my husband supplies me with all the drill presses I need (too many in fact) but I wouldn't discount the idea of a slightly larger one, like the Harbor Freight one. You're going to have change belts (which is really not a big deal & not something you're doing all the time), but it's more of a real machine tool than the little tiny o-ring type ones. Don't give up Pat, keep looking. Patty

Due to self-created disasters in the past, it has been on purgatory on the dining room table for quite some time since I now won't use equipment until I have digested the manual. It got "bumped" by the new cell phone and the new car (sigh). 450-page manual for the new car, and I won't even talk about the cell phone. At least Rio is good about returns.

One of the problems is that the standard 30 hand piece doesn't take a large enough shank . These lager core drill are about 1/4" shank and the standard hand piece only takes maybe 3/32 or an 1/8.
I have a larger Foredom with an industrial hand piece that uses collets and that takes up to 1/4".
But on that one, both the motor and hand piece are MUCH larger and heavy duty (and much more expensive).
I think this is the point that I was trying to convey with my suggestions on drill presses, was that drilling holes with these larger core drills, is really somewhat of a heavy duty operation, that needs to be done at lower speeds and needs a machine capable of that.
The other thing to keep in mind with a variable speed drill VS a belt drive. A belt drive is driving the machine at the ONE speed you set it at.
The variable speed (or flex shaft) is difficult to maintain a constant speed for the time it takes to drill a large hole.
Also, a variable speed drill (and /or flex shaft) does not generate full power at the low speeds needed for large holes.
Sorry Pat we live across the country or I'd have Tom set you up with one.
Patty

Thanks, Patty. I guess you cleared that up. I hadn't thought of the shank size.

The Little Chinese drill presses have a belt and a variable speed motor, mine has always been on the smallest pulley for the motor and largest at the spindle. The speed range is plenty fast enough and more torque that way. Pat I would like to see a photo of the "hand spike", it doesn't come up in a search as a name for a drill part. If it's the feed handle there may be an o-ring in a recess on the end without the handle to keep it from coming off in use, that must be removed to assemble and then put back on. I bought mine locally in a jewelers supply house that was closing in Portland years ago, but I also recall the Chinglish manual translated by someone with about 4th grade level ESL knowledge if that.

Now that I think more, the knob may also thread off for installation.
