Amazing Bob!
I've been wondering...and I never ran across it in any of your old threads I've gone through...what equipment are you using to grind and polish your enormous cabs?

Wow that is amazing! Imaging a xmas tree covered with agate ornaments. That’s what this reminds me of. Great shape and composition!

I use a homemade lapidary unit that has an 8" expando sanding wheel and two diamond grinding wheels. One wheel is a 2" wide 100 grit wheel and the other one is 1-1/2 wide well used 100 grit wheel. When I made the unit I spaced the wheels widely apart and lifted up so I can work under the wheels easier. A Geni and other commercial machines have the wheels far too close together to make large cabs.

I polish with a 12" slow turning carpet covered wheel using cerium oxide.

That is a very cool cab. Reminds me of some vintage/antique tree ornaments I have. Love your set up for cabbing.

bobby1 - Thank you for posting those pictures. I kept trying to wrap my head around how you could be doing it...and couldn't come up with anything other than an Expando wheel. The spaced grinding wheels were a great idea! I have a 6" Kingsley North Cabber...which has the wheels spaced further apart than any other "stock" machine. This would enable me to make cabs larger than most...but nothing compared to your monsters.

So your entire cabbing process is a new(ish) 100 grit wheel, an old 100 grit, an expando wheel, and a carpet cerium oxide? Just 3 wheels and then polish? Or does the expando wheel get changed out with multiple grits? What grit is on that? My husband talks of watching his grandpa polish on a front facing, I’m thinking likely carpet, polishing wheel like yours. Not knowing really where to start, or how to start from scratch, or anything about machines, I also just bought a modern cabbing machine. But I got the Kingsley North specifically because of the wheel spacing. Luckily I had experienced enough knuckle grinding on club borrowed other brand machines and knew a little of what I did and didn’t want. I’m pretty happy with it but I do appreciate that knowing how to build or repurpose equipment in an old school way would be a beneficial skill. I hope this info doesn’t get lost with time. We are currently refurbishing an old rock saw.
