Drop dead gorgeous cabs, Jason! Especially that first Rhodo and the Montana! I have always polished Rhodo on my leather w/cerium. The Fordite is soft like paint, because that's what it is. The original stuff and the new stuff. Layers of car paint.

LOL - However, I think the "type" of paint, and the way it was baked back in the day, was completely different than how it is today. I'm positive I read that somewhere along the way when I was reading up on Fordite... One of these days I hope to get my hands on some "original" Fordite...as I'm really curious to feel how differently they work...if at all.

Though shiny polish might be preferable for some stones, matte finish is preferred on others. Sometimes too much shine detracts from the pattern. Nice work! Good photos!

I've actually come to accept the fact certain materials won't accept a high shine...and matte is the pinnacle of the polish for them. I actually do agree with you, the matte does have a certain beauty to it. That being said, I'm dying to get my hands on some Noreena that WILL take a polish! Because I know it's out there! LOL

Nice cabs! For the Noreena, did you remember to take it out for a nice dinner first..? It does have a bit of a pink tint to it so maybe it's embarrassed?
Alright let me see if I have some extra. We'll figure this out. Might be a bit though.

Beautiful jasoninsd! I like the Montana agate the best. I'm interested to see the difference between the new fordite and the original. I got an older optivisor from one of the club members, so maybe I'll be able to start catching up to your skill level. Do you still polish with the cerium pads that came with your machine? Thanks for continuing to post your cabs, they're eye candy!

We'll figure this out. Might be a bit though. Thanks Alex! Dangit! I knew I should've wined and dined that dang thing! LOL No way...I don't want to take any of yours. We know that stuff shines! One of these days I'll get some of the "good stuff"! I might be thinking I have more skills than I do...but I feel if I can see the rough in person, I might be able to tell whether it'll take a shine. If there's any "smooth" spot on the rough, I think I could feel it and tell if there's a chance it'll take a shine. Again...I may be WAY off with that thinking! LOL Beautiful jasoninsd ! Thanks for continuing to post your cabs, they're eye candy! Thanks Perk! You and I both on the original versus new Fordite!! Seriously, good for you on getting an Optivisor!! I'm tellin' ya, it'll make a world of difference!! You're probably even with my skill level already...I just take better pictures! It totally depends on the material whether I polish with the cerium. Most materials I will. However, like those Cobbles, I only took to 14k diamond paste on the polishing canvas disk. Reason being, the moss is peeking through in a couple spots. If I had worked them on the cerium pad, the cerium would've stuck into those micro-pits. I've had that happen, and no matter what method I try, I can't get it out. The cabs shined great off the 14k, so I didn't feel I needed to take a chance with the cerium in this case.

Beautiful job, I especially love the Montana. I've had success polishing Noreena using stages of diamond paste on the slant lap polishing wheel.

Old stock Fordite is much better then the new foreign imports. Heck, even the Chevyite would work better.

I've got a lot of Montana Agate...and I'm not sure why I don't work more of it. I think it's one of those cases where I get something new in, and it keeps pushing other stuff to the back of the line! LOL Thanks for the advice on the Noreena. I may have to break out the Dremel as I've got the stages of paste, but not enough disks to do it on the slant lap. Thanks Robin! RHODO!!!!! Looking GREAT, Jason! I have only ever used diamond and I got a glassy finish.
You have created a lot of eye candy-- with NO drool warning. Shame on you.

Looks like the holiday break is over- Jason is back at the cabber
Nice set- I like the last Rhodochrosite & the Butterfly wing Jasper looks like it will make for some interesting wraps.
Lots of different things going on in those stones.
I have a question though about the Fordite.
Now I've never cut any so have no clue, but it would seem to me that it's car paint, why not polish it as if it was a car.
They sell compounds just for it.
My other question (and I guess I should go & google this one) is how can there be "new" fordite at all ?
They paint cars differently now, so I don't think they have that over spray .
Patty ... curious as usual

Old paint is probably lacquer. New paint is enamel. I'm sure lacquer was much harder and easier to polish. There are also "base colors" which have to be clear coated. They are flat. I have never been able to buff a base coat to a polish. Most new cars use base coat/clear coat.

Thanks Tela! Yeah...I forgot to say something about "bib needed"! LOL I do have a high shine on the Rhodo, but the surface "peeled" to a small degree. Not really orange peeling...but like some of the surface "flaked" off. I don't know what else to call it. In John Sinkakankas's Gemstone and Mineral Data Book that suggested working Rhodochrosite: "can also sand diamond (3-1 m) on wood to remove cleavage pits rapidly". Oh...and I guess that's what you call it since I just looked it up! LOL Looks like the holiday break is over- Jason is back at the cabber

Thanks Patty! As far as your second question...I have no clue about the new versus old way of painting cars...I'll leave that up to you to investigate! LOL I think you'd be right about the polishing compound!
