Beautiful job, Jason! It's too bad the Royal Velvet didn't work but now you know not to waste that gorgeous material on backings for doublets!

Those turned out awesome, nice work! Thank you my friend! I used slabs of the Graveyard Point I had already cut. I didn't know I was going to do doublets when I cut them...so they were 1/4" thick. The tops of three of these are less than 1mm...which means I could have had 3 other doublets out of each piece of Graveyard! Total waste of material! LOL Beautiful job, Jason! It's too bad the Royal Velvet didn't work but now you know not to waste that gorgeous material on backings for doublets! Thanks my other friend! Yeah...I was REALLY hoping that Velvet would have worked out...but as I said above, it was a day of wasted material! LOL

jasoninsd that’s a fair amount of grinding lol I had already ground two of the three down and there was NO way I was doing it a third time! My thumbs are actually aching tonight! LOL

Good looking stuff. Pretty sure that’s Beverly Marie plume specifically. Even with a lil extra grinding, it’s still a win as far as I’m concerned.

Gotta say, those turned out great jasoninsd. I remember talking with you about doublettes a while back. Graveyard has moved up further on my list of rocks I like. Great job, those turned out real nice.

Oh...I think all the grinding made these definitely worth it. Gotta say, those turned out great jasoninsd . I remember talking with you about doublettes a while back. I think Graveyard Point Plume Agate is one of those rocks where there's a lot of good...and a lot of bad. I guess I mean there's a lot of areas in the material that I don't think are all that great...but every once in awhile there's some really pretty looking plumage going on!

Dang jasoninsd those doublets are killer! I normally really like Graveyard Point plume just the way it is but those doublets are on another level! I tried to pick a favorite but just can't lol, they are all superb.

Now...I think I've been coming down with "Plume Pox"! LOL I really wanted that fourth one to be my favorite because I love that shape. They all have some level of depth to them thanks to the backing, but that third one has some unreal depth to it in person.

Beauties Jason
I've been trying to compare the backing between the first 3 & the 4th.
I guess you're saying you thought it would be different with the Obsidian backing, and it's not. Personally, I like the 4th one. Nice pattern, interesting shape, beauty polish as usual .
BUT, that poor BC Ocean Picture Stone.
Sadly it looks like a dud when you throw it up against the Graveyard Doublets.
On it's own it's a nice interesting cab .

Thanks Patty! Yeah...I was hoping the sheen on the Velvet Obsidian would be visible through the Graveyard Point. I think the agate in the GYP isn't clear enough for that to happen. It's why the color on all of them look like a "cloudy" black rather than a "jet" black. I'm still convinced it would work if I use a material that is more clear...like a Montana Agate can be.

Well, hot damn!!! What can I say that hasn't been said? Those are (almost) all awesome. I agree with Patty, the BC stone is out of its element.
You've come a long way from pears/teardrops.

Oh yeah...doublets are definitely my new addiction! LOL Well, hot damn!!! What can I say that hasn't been said? Those are (almost) all awesome. I agree with Patty, the BC stone is out of its element.
You've come a long way from pears/teardrops. Thanks Tela! Yeah...I knew I shouldn't have included that BC in with this group. When you throw it in with the doublets, it's kind of like Peewee Herman hanging out with a bunch of bikers! LOL

Absolutely gorgeous! I'm in total awe of how gorgeous rocks can be, especially when combined with such great talent! Now off to research doublet and what that even is .

So what color backing would you go for with something like Montana agate? I’ve been wondering whether or not the contrast will be any better than the clear agate surrounding the inclusions. I'd go for something other than black...in fact colors on the lighter end of the spectrum. I picked up a piece of BC Ocean Picture Stone (not the one from above) that is all but junk. There's cracks all along where the matrix meets the agate...but it does have some nice cool sky blue in the agate portion. I was looking at it yesterday and was wondering about just using the blue for a backing...I think that would look awesome with the right Montana. Absolutely gorgeous! I'm in total awe of how gorgeous rocks can be, especially when combined with such great talent! Now off to research doublet and what that even is . Thanks Peta! Doublets are just two rocks epoxied together...then throw a spit shine on them and call it good! LOL Here's a thread that gives a tutorial...and might explain things in a little more detail than I just did! LOL forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/32781/doublet-triplet-tutorial

Bravura Cabochon Designs I don't think backing a Montana will do anything to enhance it. May be just me, but the patterns floating in the clear agate are magical. Especially a really good pattern. Someone needs to try it and to see if it's worthwhile or not.
