Very nice combination of materials and cab cutting jasoninsd ! I’m assuming the triangle cab is waiting in the wings to be posted on the contest thread? 🧐🤓

Nah...once I post it somewhere else, I can't post it in the contest thread. Although I did think about entering it into the contest this month...I might have to see if I can come up with something else now.

I think the 2nd cab, the oval is my favorite. Sorry to hear you are out of basenite. Did you find a new supply? I’ve been wondering about a white material. I haven’t looked yet what is good to use but I’ve got some super thin really pretty unidentified light colored orby material that just needs to be thicker to cab and I don’t want to add any color behind it. I’m not going to touch it till I’m better so I have plenty of time but figure it’s never too early to start gathering!

I’m not going to touch it till I’m better so I have plenty of time but figure it’s never too early to start gathering! I've got two members who are working on cutting me some backing material. I have a Sagenite Agate on dop right now that I put a white section of Polka Dot Agate on as backing. It's come off dop three times! The last time I put it back on dop, I saw there was a crack in the Sagenite. I was going to finish grinding it today to see if the fracture will disappear...or if it goes all the way to the backing (which I'm assuming it will), but I got busy doing other stuff. If it does go all the way through, I'll just grind off that Sagenite and keep the Polka Dot for backing on another one. I guess that was a really long explanation about me working on a piece with white backing! LOL I've seen a bunch of doublets with white backing. I chose white for the above because the Sagenite is brown...and I figure the white would let it show up better.

That’s a good idea. I have some polka dot so I’ll check for areas of white large enough. I realized too as I went and read the doublet/triplet tutorial linked above that I may have to do a triplet so I’ll need to find some optical quartz too. I hadn’t thought of that but I think my slabs are too thin to even do a super low dome with.

I hadn’t thought of that but I think my slabs are too thin to even do a super low dome with. Depending on the thickness of the optical quartz, or even the thickness of the slab you have, you may not have to back it with anything. Another option would be to use a "blah" Montana Agate as backing...a piece where there's mainly agate. I've seen plenty of Montanas like that. I wouldn't have dreamed of doing a low dome when I first started...but now they don't intimidate me as I think the are FAR easier to do on a cabbing machine than a flat lap. (And I know the capabilities of your machine! LOL) Just a suggestion...try doing a couple low dome cabs from some other material to figure out the process. It'll open all kinds of doors for you.
