Do you guys have a problem with cabs piling up? I have too many. I have all my riker boxes and then 2 large bins, and 3 Chinese takeout trays. I, long ago, got rid of a lot that I didn't particular get inspired by. They were freebies and giveaways. But, I don't sell anymore. So, I'm not giving them out as freebies anymore. There's nothing wrong with them, they just don't float my boat.
What do you guys do? Or, do you have any suggestions? (Besides selling them.)

This is of no help, but for the sake of conversation, I do nothing but hoard mine. I have no plans for them other than cut and hoard them 😂. Maybe some day I’ll set or wrap them. And probably hoard those too.

To answer your first question...yes...I have a problem with them piling up. I do all my own cabs...and it just seems easier to do ten cabs in a day than it does trying to do ten wraps. Thus I probably have done a 20:1 cab to wrap ratio...and the pile seems to be growing exponentially!
As far as "what to do with the pile"...I'm no further along answering that than you are! LOL

I have a TON of cabs where they're "ok"...and not great. We chatted about this...I'm trying (for the most part) to stop cabbing "ok" stuff since that's what seems to be piling up. If I have my choice on wrapping a stone, I want it to be one of the "top tier" cabs versus the mediocre cabs. Like you said, nothing wrong with them...they're just there... Maybe one of these days I'll bite the bullet and just make fridge magnets out of them! LOL (I cringe at the thought of one of my cabs becoming a fridge magnet for some reason! LOL)

One thing I do plan to do with mine, is when I get a bunch of the same material, is to frame them nicely and hang them on the wall as art. Maybe if some family members are lucky, they’ll get a frame given to them. But we’ll see. I have a hard time parting with my rocks.

Nothing wrong with wanting to keep them. My keepers are in my stack of riker boxes. I love to pull them out and look through them.

If you think cabs pile up you should try tumbling. Every week 2-3 more pounds of polished stones. While I do have hundreds of cabs collecting dust they are nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands polished tumbles. To make it worse I actually spend more time and effort on some of my individual tumbled stones then I do making a cab so most are not give away tumbles.
On the bright side I absolutely do not hoard rough stones. I purchase my rough as needed and have done a pretty good job of keeping up with it.

Chuck Yeah, I imagine tumblers have quite a few laying around.
I'm pretty good about rough because I have no more room to put any. LOL!

Maybe decide to do a project with them for your new house (when you move in the future). Inlay them into wood for a table top, make a bird bath out of them, etc? I don't know. We sell ours at our show, but we don't actively sell them anywhere else. I'm absolutely no help here, am I?

I actually like the idea of magnets. If you are going to do a show it’d be a good low priced item to offer. Maybe hitting different price points would encourage more sales. And I also like the framed art idea. When we cleaned out my husband’s grandparents house a few of us got his grandpa's cabs. Some of them were framed in 8x10 picture frames, just a bunch of cabs pressed into a foam backing with glass on top. But there were entire frames full of Bruneau and Deschutes. Quite a find. Now a days the framing style could be done better. Another option would be to sell them in lots or collections. I don’t know quantity, maybe 5 or 10. Maybe some new wrappers or Metalsmithera would be interested. So I guess sell, gift, or make collection art!

I like the art frame idea. One of the restaurants we eat at has a framed wine cork mosaic that might be a good idea. My wife says if I die first the best material will go in the casket.

I generally try to steer people away from making pendants with glue on bails but for quality cabs that are not floating your boat for wire wrapping or smithing it's not a horrible option. I have shied away from making any to sell at my tables but several other vendors sell them. Usually $10 each or 3 for $25 on a cheap cord. I guess it would be better to have them end up like that and at least maybe worn be someone rather then collecting dust in a box. I know you do not sell at shows but you may very well be able to wholesale 50-100 of them to someone that does. I had to dig back 10 yrs to when my kids were doing these to sell Chuck

I think Robin & Victor have the right idea. If you're not actively selling them, some kind of mosaic.
You could start out simple with a picture frame. But wow what a great back splash in a bathroom or kitchen. I like the idea ! Patty

I have the same problem. I can usually tell whether a stone will be worth setting by the time I reach the 600 wheel. If it is deemed a dud I stop at that point so my collection is not even worthy of giving away. Lately I have gone back through these unfinished cabs and found several that show potential if they were to be re-cut as ring size cabs. In the end i am very happy that I kept them!

Well, everyone- you've come up with some good ideas- besides selling them. A collage picture frame might be nice. I don't know about doing a table thing since they are all domed. I don't think it would look right. I did order some rare earth magnets for the fridge.
I think I'll post some in the marketplace and see if anyone wants to do a one on one trade.

I don't think you've seen the cool " River Tables" that you can make. Think of the river with all the cabs as submerged pebbles, under the epoxy.
That would be pretty cool .
Since you think you already have too many cabs, I don't know if trading them for others is such a good idea.
OTOH, maybe you really just want different cabs for new ideas ?

Oh yeah, I have seen the river tables. They are awesome!! BUT, I'm not that ambitious.
Trading would give me a chance to work maybe new materials and shapes.

I Barder with mine, for cabs I want, slabs I want or whatever seems far on a trade... Sometimes you can come up with some interesting things.. I even traded cabs for some artwork on a Caribou antler I had laying around.. If your looking for something that's different on slabs of material, hit me up, I can see what I have for you..
