I have a little end cut of native silver. I decided to back it with devcon (like jb weld). It's thin, but really pretty. With the irregular back I think that was the way to go. So, last night, I did a pretty thin backing and got out the glass grinder to cut the perimeter. #1 I forgot how icky messy silver is. #2 the devcon wasn't completely dry. YUCK. I keep hitting areas where it was like soft rubber. But damn, I have the grinder out... So, I put the stone on a hot plate. Hopefully, that will help cure it the rest of the way. When done, I plan to drill a hole for it. AFTER I clean up the mess.

Sorry...had to chuckle! I've only worked a couple silver ore pieces...and yes...it's amazing the mess it makes. I can only imagine what your poor grinder is/was looking like! Marcasite is another very messy metal...

Well, heat is making it sticky and spongy. Maybe my hardener was too old or something. I'm sure I used enough. This may be a big fat fail.

If it's not cured right- why not try soaking it in acetone. Worth a shot.

After it cooled off, it was good to go. Worked.
Now that I have it ground, I see that it is not level. I may or may not have to add more. One area of the piece is so thin, I dare not level/flatten the back.
