I will be traveling through Utah in the middle of February and was wondering if it's possible to get out to the Dugway geode beds to pick some. Is the ground too frozen? Roads accessible? Obviously I am not from anywhere near this area and have no clue what winter conditions are like there. Any help or other suggestions for Hounding in Utah the mid to end of February would be appreciated. I'll be traveling between Moab and Zion. I know the high country will be snowed in. I have a few places to check out already that I believe should be accessible. Mostly looking for tumbling materials and am not picky. Just looking to do some hounding while on vacation. Thanks

It's purely random if the Dugway geode beds will be suitable for hounding in February. You could luck out, but likely not. Probably be a lot of mud when the surface thaws in the daytime. I live an hour East of that area and right now I have a foot of snow in my yard.
I would confine my rock hounding to the area from Moab to Green River and then South to Hanksville. Stop in the Hanksville Rockin Riddle rock shop and Cathy with direct you where to go. Don't forget to get a Stansburger at Stans burger shop on the South end of town.

I like Dugway in the winter. Fewer people. Almost always have the place to my self. But and here comes the but. It can get muddy and frozen at the same time. It is very hard to drive. Last time in I walked about 3/4 miles. I got a lot of small geodes 2.5” minus. When I got back to the truck I loaded up and got stuck about 50 ft from the turn off. Worked for 2 hours to gut unstuck. 2 young men in a jeep drove by ( first car the entire time). Pulled me up and accepted 1/2 a bucket of geodes as a thanks. It’s a long drive on dirt roads. Very remote. I have a sat phone and ham radio and have used them to call for help. My advice would be try it but not alone and not with just one vehicle. It’s not worth spending a day or two stuck.
