When you use the quote button to reply, for some reason you can upload a photo. Best way is to just click the reply button and tag who you were going to quote using the @ sign right in front of the person's name. If you hover over a person's name, their tagging name will show up. Most are what you see on your screen, but there are a couple that are different. So Rockoonz would be @ rockoonz without the space in there. Thanks for posting this Robin. I was going to do it last night...but had a "squirrel" moment apparently! LOL Had to fix a little typo in there!

Rockoonz , thank you for your post and yes i would very much like to see the tool rest for your verticle lap for angled pieces which ive been doing free hand which can be very touchy especially with smaller thin pieces. And speaking of a tool rest, i made one (rudimentary) last evening that fits in my Genie tray for the end lap. Havent tried it out yet but hoping it will work out for flat 90 deg. Im thinking i might be able to mark out or scribe lines (or tape) for different angles also. ive mostly used the 6” stand alone Crystalite and not the Genie arbor end lap. ps ill post a pic of my tool test as soon as i figure out how to do on a reply🤣 When you use the quote button to reply, for some reason you can't upload a photo. Then you will have a cloudinary button. Takes less than a minute. The pic has my Al Sesona intarsia grinder in it, great machine but I wish it was 8", variable speed, and able to be slanted.

Got it thanks, And i wish i had a 6” intarsia grinder🤷♂️. Very nice pic of your work and IG also. BTW, I spoke with Ameritool today to ask about their tool rest and if somehow one could be acquired somehow with a purchase of their flat lap. They said they would check with “Bob” when he returns from Tucson and get back to me. Ill keep my fingers crossed. And if so, Ill move the Crystalite 6” lap out of the way. 🤔😉 Thanks to hummingbirdstones also for navigation instructions

Rockoonz - Lee, I've been staring at that picture for the last ten minutes trying to figure out how to replicate that thing! Thanks for posting the pics!! - Oh...and your first intarsia in that thread you linked was awesome! I don't want to re-post the entire post because it is long, but in the Creating Cabochons section there is post by Pat from Sept.30, 2017 with a picture of a simple home made rest to make intarsia on a flat lap.

My mistake - it was in Creating Cabochons Tutorials. The Thread is INTARSIA- a walk through my first piece.

Nice info, pics, links and references regarding flat lap hand tools to get a good 90 deg flat. I currently dont have an Ameritool lap (maybe soon tho). I currently have a CrystalMaster 6” horizontal lap and it has a domed top which makes a hand tool rest a bit wobbly. So last week I made a hand stand to work with a vertical master lap on the arbor end of my Genie. The spritzer doesn’t work to well with it so a water spray bottle is used to keep lap wet. So far so good but lots of splatters. On the horizontal lap i have a slight tendency to slightly tilt my piece a tad….finger control i suppose. I have to get eye level with the lap to control the cut a bit better. im currently looking into an Ameritool lap and if so will try to find a ready made hand assist tool shown in above pics or make one for it, also shown in linked pics. Hopefully an Intarsia Grinder such as Mr. Sensona’s will arrive in the market some day soon. Thanks for all the information provided, very interesting and helpful. included is a pic of my recent foray into Intarsia. An Earring and Pendant set in progress. The earrings were planned to be half round but by the time i finished lapping they’re too thin for half rounds so flats they will be with rounded edges.

Wanted to show you the finished pieces of the original pic of first intarsia. Made a small baseplate, bail, peg and post for pendant and peg & post on earrings. Hope you like.

Thank You jasoninsd - Jason and i probably should have posted the equip mods in the equipment section. Dont know about the genius tho 🤷♂️. Im slowly getting the hang of sections, postings and responding. As to the home made tools, anything to assist the “wobble” factor for the 90 deg and angle cuts……old fingers 😉…..especially on the smaller pieces. Working on a couple other pieces and spent most of a day cutting basenite slabs for bands, borders and or backings if needed. I prefer finishing both sides….my ocd(ness)

They definitely deserve a spot!
