Hi everyone. My wife and I are headed out west on vacation in early March and may be able work in a day and 1/2 near Kingman, AZ. I have never been there but would love to do some rockhounding if possible. I found information on the Cuesta Fire Agate Mine between Kingman and Oatman. I am not sure I am interested in digging at Cuesta but I believe he will allow us to walk the property for $30. I would love to know if anyone has had any experience with Cuesta to know if it is a good spot and worth the $30. Also, I would love to hear about other possible spots we could try. We only have a rental car and we can hike a bit but nothing too difficult. I would love to have the opportunity to hunt agates, chalcedony, jasper or other good tumbling/polishing stones, that would be great. Thanks in advance for any suggestion you might have.

Burro Creek is about an hour away. You may want to touch bases with vwfence , I believe he lives in Kingman.

The Kingman turquoise retail office and store has a dirt gravel muddy parking lot. They unload and haul huge trucks of stuff there for the stabilizing process. Stuff gets spilled. So look in the parking lot. Same goes for a lot of rock shops! The Rock Shed in South Dakota is the same.

Thanks for the suggestion.

there is a lot of stuff that can be collected in the Kingman area for rock hounds . Fire agate is found over most of the black mountains from Yuma to Las Vegas but is concentrated in pockets . There are also chalcedony desert roses , banded rhyolite , squigley jasper , bowenite , granate , quartz , and who knows what the last floods brought in . Burro creek is about 60 miles from kingman and the stuff found there varies . most of the areas i would recommend 4 wheel drive unless you dont mind hiking. For those of you visiting the turquoise mine store , i am only about 10 miles away and you go by a rock shop on the way . I am happy to let you dig in my rock piles if you dont have the time for extended hunting as long as im not at the doctors . I also have a lot of slabs and drop offs i will be very reasonable on if there is any interest. Wayne

Brand new to rockhounding. Looking for tips for turquoise hounding in Kingsman (specifically north of Kingsman in Mineral Park). Can you just walk around mineral park and have a chance to find turquoise laying on the ground? Or do you have to dig? Will it be obviously blue in hue, or will I need to bring some water to wash off dust off random rocks?

Drove up one of the BLM roads below the mine and we were searching the washes. One of my friends found a really nice nugget of turquoise that washed down from the mine.

Mineral Park is not open to collecting , nor is the area that is worked by Collboughs {spelling } turquoise mine . you may find a piece here and there in the washes after some of the floods which will be starting soon .

I'm a little late. If you go with someone who knows what they're doing, the $50 (current price) is well worth it. Bring a jack and a generator. There are multiple spots in the area with good places to search. Get in contact with Jack Norton at Raw Rock Creations rock shop, he will take you up to his claims. He used to do it for tips, but may charge now. He goes up to Cuesta occasionally, but that is Don Nelsons. You can work out a deal of giving half of what you find in exchange for not having to pay the $50.
