My son handed this rock to me "to do something with it." To save as much of the original rock, I gave it a convex surface with the lap discs that came with the All U Need High Tech 8 inch flat lap. One day I hope to get the padded lap discs. Up to this I've been using it to remove unwanted bits of rock that were headed for the tumbler. Didn't think to take a before picture of this fist sized rock until I already was well into the project. My son says he can't remember if he picked this rock up in Arkansas or near the Grand Canyon. Lol. Just like his father.

The padded discs are nice and helpful but not totally necessary. You can still use them to cab. It just takes a litte more "finesse" in technique to get the facets off the face of the cab and smooth it all out. I used a combination of rocking, rolling and spinning to smooth the facets out. A lighter touch is needed when doing it and constant motion or else you put new facets in the face.

I also don't have the padded discs (6") with mine, but when I reached out to Hi-Tech they offered to send me a backing disc for free and a foam backer and polish disc for cost - so I took them up on it. I have more stages on mine now - 80, 180 on diamond grinding discs, 325 (or is it 345), 600, 1200 on smoothing discs, then 14,000 and 40,000 (diamond paste) on polishing discs (the 40,000 I'm going to put on the polishing disc with the foam backer. Just trying to get my basement set up and then I don't have to sit in the cold
