MSL Curiosity is going about its business exploring Mars. The high-tech rover is currently exploring the sulphate-bearing unit on Mt. Sharp, the central peak in Mars' Gale Crater. Serendipity placed a metal meteorite in its path. The meteorite is made mostly of nickel and iron, and it has a name: Cacao. (Chocolate comes from cacao.) Cacao isn't very large; it's only about 30 cm (1 ft.) across. Curiosity has come across several meteorites since landing in Gale Crater in August 2012. That meteorite looks SO cool! Can you imagine finding something like that in your backyard!?! Yes I can! I'd also like it to take out my garage when it lands because it would be worth more and I could get a new garage. I think it was the second year Vince and I were married we saw a meteor from the deck of the cabin flying through the sky. It was glowing green and pretty dang big in the sky. I know people in CA saw it and maybe New Mexico. I can't remember where it eventually hit, but it was pretty awesome.

You have some competition...I think Target's been trying to get that to happen for years! LOL I can only imagine how cool that meteorite was to see streaking through the sky!!

You know how those meteors are. They never hit the bullseye.

And neither is that one. In March 2004, Spirit acquired the first image of Earth from another planet’s surface. And in January 2005, Opportunity found the first meteorite identified on another world: the basketball-sized Heat Shield Rock. It was the first of eight iron-nickel meteorites found by the roving twins.
A pretty good biography of the pair here: 20 years ago: Spirit and Opportunity rovers launched for Marswww.astronomy.com/space-exploration/20-years-ago-spirit-and-opportunity-launched-for-mars/
