The coastline as the crow flies, is maybe 55-60 miles from here, never too far away for a trip. Today was quite warm for February in New Hampshire, actually the whole winter has been well above normal temps almost every day. At least so far! So today with 45 or so temps on the beaches, and just light breezes, AND low tide happening mid-morning, you couldn’t ask for a better day to rock-hound the beach. In the summer, you can’t get near these places without paying absurd parking fees, if at all. But in the winter, we’re left alone. A few dog walkers were on the beach, but mostly the few there were doing the same thing I was, although the 2 I spoke with weren’t going to tumble their finds. I’ll be honest here too, I’ve never actually done this here, with rocks I collected from a beach along the coastline (I’ve always wanted to try this!) So I’m maybe going to be in for some surprises, and no doubt will learn something too. Below, some of the booty, a good amount of this rock is in a 6 lb drum, in water and 60/90. Even though it’s all already pretty smooth stuff, I want to get the outer crust off these rocks, and see what they look like underneath it. I added about an ounce of liquid bleach, to deal with any microbes. I’ll check it several times in the next 48 hours watching for gas build-up.

Don’t be disappointed with a matte finish on most all of ‘em. That’s par for the course when playing with beach rocks . . . it’s surprising how many of us stick with the hobby after that cruel start.

Great haul, and I hope you thoroughly enjoy the process. I am envious of your proximity--what area are you going to?

That's awesome you were able to get out! The hounding bug is starting to gnaw at me. It's been too long since I've been out wandering around!
