After much experimenting I have created the below as a partially fitting tribute to jasoninsd 's much maligned cabochon. First, this is a *really* nice cabochon--the disjointedness (is that a word?) that appeared to some is not apparent in person. When I first saw it, I liked the asymmetry of the curves and did my best to maintain/accent them. It sort of reminds me of a profile of a pitcher plant bloom, or with more squinting a profile of a Jack in the Pulpit bloom. Credit to Tela's 2011 tutorial for the top (yes, it's been that long!) modified to fit the cab, but I used the basic idea. I learned a lot making this wrap, mostly what wouldn't work, and a small amount of what would work. Were it not for my promise to make barbed wire, it wouldn't be there, but this profile of a flower morphed into an ancient Roman battle shield to accommodate the barbed wire. It is still in purgatory--that period when I look at it pre-caffeine and decide what else needs to be done, still needs to be Sunshine clothed and cleaned; and please ignore the dog/cat hair; it is a fixture of all my jewelry and often includes an accidental small goose feather. Comments, criticism and laughter welcome!

I really like this. I like the shape, color and the interesting dendrites (? is that right?) in the middle look cool. Add in the gold wire and the barbed wire and this piece pops! I keep looking at all of the wire work that is shared here and wonder if it's something I could ever do. Gotta get cabbing down first lol (one step at a time), but I'm always in awe of how you know how much wire, where to bend it, etc to get such a nice look...

I have to say I was truly looking forward to seeing the results of Marc! You did NOT disappoint! The style you went with was perfect! And I think you absolutely nailed the barbed wire!! Fantastic job on this challenging piece!!

The main wires are antiqued copper (just a bit) and the "whatever it is" holding the barbs are not antiqued--the color is what I got after annealing and I liked it so I didn't pickle it--it was added on after the rest was done. Of course it's something you can do! Just do it--each piece you screw up (and I've had many, including several takes on this one) you learn from. Eventually your screw ups become less but never nonexistent, at least for me. As for the length of the wire, one would be wise to have me say how much wire you need, then ignore me and add on three more inches. I frequently don't figure it right.

Fantastic job on this challenging piece!! Means a lot to me, Jason, after I asserted strongly that it was a brilliant cabochon. Had it not been for my barbed wire commitment, I would have brought the wires on the left down a bit further (toga style) and added that copper cornflake. Now, please tell me what you don't like or what you would do differently.

I think it's a brilliant wrap. It goes perfectly with that cab. It's a beautiful cab that somehow has a brutish look and you pulled off the same thing with the wrap with the graceful curves on the right contrasting with the barb wire.

Now, please tell me what you don't like or what you would do differently. Honestly, I'm not sure that I WOULD do anything differently. But...if you're looking for alternative design ideas...I can see this as well: Taking the four looping wires that are on the left, and shift those over to the right. The highest point of the cab is on the left...so I wonder if putting the "high" looping wires over on the right side would "balance" the top. The barbed wire could have been two separate strands going across the face of the cab...one in the upper third of the cab and the second in the lower third. The strands of barbed wire would have mimicked the linear pattern of the (what looks like) barbed wire in the pattern. We talked about this particular stone having a "blank canvas" other than the linear pattern in the middle...so running the two strands wouldn't necessarily hide anything on the stone. *Now...I'm not in any way saying what I've proposed is what you should have done! I really do like what you designed! I was just letting my mind wander since you asked.

Your comment definitely brought me a smile . . .

I really do like what you designed! I was just letting my mind wander since you asked. Jason, I actually tried two single strands, but I was trying an "X" at the bottom, the top of which would have tipped the "natural" barbed wire of the cab. I couldn't get the 26-gauge round to hold still and learned (the hard way) that there's only so much you can twist and/or try to otherwise tighten 26-gauge wire on a single supporting strand. Actually, I had learned this before but I'm stubborn so I tried it again. And failed again. For those that prefer symmetry, moving the drape over to the other side would be perfect. And thank you *so much* for your input. These are precisely the thoughts that I would like to hear!

I am usually a man of few words, so I'll just say "I'm liking this." I like it a lot.

An interesting wrap Susan. It has a graceful flow to it, even with the barbed wire.

You’ve done a marvelous job with that wrap. I’m actually getting much different vibes from the combination of the cab and the wrap. Rather than being masculine, I’m getting more feminine vibes from it. It actually makes me think of Poison Ivy from the Batman comics, where the barbed wire is actually a vine and the green of the stone and the red of the copper match her look well.

Thank you Patty, but not for my barbed wire commitment, I would have handled it a bit differently. And I have you to thank for the opportunity to wrap it.

Interesting observation. I actually found the curves to be very feminine, especially due to the narrowness of the cab. And I like your visualization.

That is awesome. The barbed wire matches the cab's design well. Well done and totally unique.

Dang, Susan!!! This so nice AND creative. I LOVE LOVE LOVE how you echoed the dendrite "barbed wire" in the cab with your own. I really like this shape and definitely think of it is feminine. Thank you for running with the tute! I love to see what people do with them.
