Just bought a 16kg smelter myself and looking forward to learning alloying and casting among other things I plan to experiment with.

vegasjames It is difficult, at least trying to cast objects but like anything there's a learning curve. Aside from that it's a lot of fun! I think you're going to enjoy it.

vegasjames It is difficult, at least trying to cast objects but like anything there's a learning curve. Aside from that it's a lot of fun! I think you're going to enjoy it. I have some ideas to try. Going to go with lost wax instead of sand for one and heat the molds prior to casting to slow cooling of the metal, which will allow more time to work out any voids and bubbles. Been writing down a lot of notes on things to try including special alloys, ways to mold, ways to get out bubbles, etc. For example, there are some alloys that expand upon cooling instead of contracting, which will be better for filing voids.
Also bought a rock crusher so I can now grind down my massive pile of lower grade malachite I cannot use for lapidary as well as some other ores. I can reduce the malachite to copper oxide in the smelter, then add carbon to reduce it the rest of the way to copper metal.

Some of my delightful times were back in the 60's casting leaves and seahorses and whatever would burn away.

Is that a cuttlefish bone you are using? Yes, it's cuttlefish. Here's another video on cuttlefish bone casting.

We've been using a mapp gas torch to melt the silver. Had a Smith little torch waiting to get set up for a while so I bought an oxygen concentrator to use with propane. Snowing like crazy today so I'll probably get that set up π

Snowing like crazy today so I'll probably get that set up π Couldn't help but notice that Ninja coffee maker, those are real nice.......My old Crusinart finally gave up, stainless carafe 12yrs old. So I bought a brand new Crusinart Grind and Brew w/ stainless carafe......hard to find a coffee maker w/stainless without spending a ton. This machine does a nice job of grinding and brewing. Ya, I'm only a fresh bean grind drinker, so thought I'd give this machine a try. Just a few more parts to clean but worth it so far.

pizzano that ninja brews a good cup of coffee, it is not a grinder unit. We love using fresh bean coffee, in fact we roast our own β I know their not the greatest but we use a whirlybird coffee/spice grinder for our beans. I do have one complaint about the ninja - it leaks from underneath. I've looked inside but haven't been able to locate the leak. Need to look again closer.
