Wow, those are so cool. # 3 and 2 are my favorites but pretty much I don’t get tired of looking at them. I still can’t believe you people can just walk around and find those things! I suppose if you don’t have it it just seems so unique. All we have here is carnelian and petrified wood. They can be fun but not very spectacular.

Thanks for the compliments. khara made the comment about Petoskey stones just lying around. I don't know if I would say that. I grew up in Petoskey but have lived my adult life in the Kansas City area. I get back to see family a couple times a year and usually look for Petoskey stones and other rocks while I am there. You can find some nice small ones in easy to access areas but the larger ones I find are typically in areas that are not as easy to access. The pic below shows an area where I looked last spring just a couple days after most of the ice went out. I walked between 2- and 3-miles round trip to this area and climbed down part of the bluff and over the rocks and trees along the shore looking for them. But not complaining too much. Petoskey stones are kind of like other rocks people collect. I bet for everyone pictured here, there are over a hundred that I left on the shore because they weren't that good, threw them away once I got home wondering why I picked them up in the first place, or polished them but they were nowhere near as good as these. My brother and his wife who live north of Petoskey, have a small cottage that they rent out in the summer. They give each guest one of my polished Petoskey stones as a souvenir. They aren't as good as these, but everyone seems to love them. I call them my practice stones.

Aw that’s a cool story about the souvenir stones for the cottage guests! I bet they really do love that. Ya it’s kind of in jest the way I speak. I grew up with a very sarcastic father. 🙂 It sounds like your Petoskey’s are a lot like our native carnelians and petrified woods. A lot of junky smaller materials and every now and then you find something really cool. I’ve found a couple nice carnelians worthy of polishing and photographing but not really enough to keep me going back looking for more of them.

He really has a wonderful presentation style. If I ever make it up to a mineral show, for sure one of these I have to pick up.

My auntie loves in traverse city she is visiting the Puget sound this week. I was given this Petoskey and I had it face polished 12 hours later. Love these stones.
