A couple of months ago, I was slabbing a hunk of Lavic Siding jasper when suddenly I saw this fella looking up at me! Excited about the possibilities for a cab, I immediately turned it over to see how far the pattern might have moved. It didn't! That is, it wasn't — there was absolutely no trace of the pattern on the backside. So it just sat until yesterday when it finally called out to me.
It had to be polished flat. And it had to become a cabojohn**! The pair of "eyes" weren't quite centered on the "nose" or "mouth", so I chose to place the latter in the center:
Cutting the facets by hand on my flat lap was pretty easy, but it required some minor adjustments with the higher grits. After 1500 grit I simply put it to the higher grit wheels of my Genie and Pixie.
**rockpickerforever Jean had explained to me a while back that an earlier faceted, flat-faced "cab" of mine was actually a "cabojohn", a style of cutting named for and created by a former member who is deceased. See SHAPING A CABOJOHN--101

Gary, you seriously chose SO correctly on this one!! That is a fantastic capture...and obviously the Cabojohn was absolutely necessary to preserve the pattern! You know you nailed it if rockjunquie can see it! LOL

Gary, you worked that alien to perfection! It's obviously one the bad aliens. It has red on the side of his mouth from some human it abducted and decided to eat for lunch!

It's right eye is scarred from battle while it's left pierces with laser vision. In it's mouth the mist of souls taken swirls in an endless cloud. Beautiful work!

Hmmm, is he blowing bubbles?
Turn him upside down. New mouth is closed. Couple of teeth showing.

Thank you all for your kind comments!
A couple of months ago, I was slabbing a hunk of Lavic Siding jasper ...
Thanks for the tag Gary opalpyrexia . It was nice to think of John Sands today. He was a great guy, and lots of fun, even though I never actually met him in person. But I can say that about a good number of RTHlings (only knowing them virtually). Here's a link to a tutorial he did on cabojohns SHAPING A CABOJOHN--101 Thank you, Jean. I'm happy that you appreciated his mention. I must admit that I have been remiss in not checking in with you to learn how your doing. I sure hope that you are making progress and feeling much better!
Gary, you worked that alien to perfection! It's obviously one the bad aliens. It has red on the side of his mouth from some human it abducted and decided to eat for lunch! Thank you, Robin — I see the sloppy eater!!
I see spiderman winking, but I suppose he could be considered alien as well 🤣 Beautiful cab Gary! Thank you, Nate. Now I certainly do see Spiderman. I don't know how I could have missed that. Looks like a marvel comic guy. Nice Gary ! Patty Thank you, Patty. I agree! It's right eye is scarred from battle while it's left pierces with laser vision. In it's mouth the mist of souls taken swirls in an endless cloud. Beautiful work! Thank you, dirtsifter. I think that I may use your imaginative words to help sell this guy!
Hmmm, is he blowing bubbles? Turn him upside down. New mouth is closed. Couple of teeth showing. Thank you, Pat. You're right! I never turned it upside down, something I always do when looking for patterns. Very Cool. I see a luchadore, but I'm just weird like that. Thank you, Lee. Yes! Now that's all that I see!
