where was it found ?
looks glassy obsidian like
perhaps by the feel of how it weighs slag would have dense heavy feel obsidian fairly light
not sure how to break it how big is it ? could try knapping an edge with another stone or metal object
slag wouldn't chip very easily
Welcome to RTH !

Unfortunately, I don’t totally remember where I found the piece. I remember I found some larger rock pieces near a railroad track outside my fiancés family’s neighborhood (hence the thought that it might be slag), but I don’t remember if this piece was part of that find. The piece as a whole measured at around 3.5 in wide/9 in circumference around the widest part of the rock. However, in trying out the knapping idea w my giant hunk of quarts, I achieved this outcome, haha: I will say, knapping the new sharp edges of the halved rock does result in chips of the piece falling off. Not sure if that narrows it down. Thanks for the welcome! Happy to be part of the community.

Can you see any bubbles in it? If so, then probably slag.

I don't believe that slag would be that smooth and shiney. Looks like black obsidian to me.

Thanks for the responses all. I’m going to go ahead with breaking them up into more tumble-able pieces (especially now that I know how to with my quartz chunk). Once I make those, I should have enough to run a barrel of obsidian (gotta finish my current batch of jaspers/agates though).

I'm in the obsidian camp. the best way to break it (if you don't have a saw) is to use a hammer and chisel and try to break with the chipping/breaking that has previously occurred. If memory serves me correctly, obsidian doesn't have natural cleavage, so this might be a slight indentation where you can get your chisel in.

Others have hit the nail on the head here. Obsidian tends not to be bubbly. Not always true. Also, obsidian tends to not be green as the corner of image two appears. Can't say with 100% but I would lean toward man made either slag or probably glass factory.

Is this piece green? It looks green in the pics. My guess is glass but you might want to get a positive ID before breaking it up. Green obsidian is rare.
