Good morning. I’m new to the forum, looking for advice, and ideas from the group. My mother collected rocks, I have collected rocks, my four kids collected rocks, and now my grandkids are collecting rocks. I have recently received a small rock tumbler from my wife for my birthday. Its a National Geographic unit. I have some rocks tumbling as we speak. I have read that adding mineral oil to the final process helps. Can anyone confirm if this will work?

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! I don't believe I've heard adding mineral oil to the tumble helps the process. I have heard of people heating their rocks in the oven, then applying a coat of mineral oil to the rock. This gives the rock a "shine" for a time. I know a lot of Fairburn collectors do this so they don't have to tumble the rocks and lose any of the material.

Welcome to the forum.
Never heard of using mineral oil this way, but a proper tumble would mot nee oil. Some people will use the oil on softer rocks that can't tumble to bring out color, but it leaves a dull look and tends to attract dust.

Welcome to the forum from NE Ohio! I have seen comments from folks on Reddit who use mineral oil to make the rocks shiny, but if you use the right polish, your rocks (mostly) should polish without using oil.

Welcome from California.
Not a tumbler, but you can use a little bit of oil to make rocks shiny temporarily—- for a display at a show etc. use just a very little so the rock doesn’t bleed oil forever.

I'm not a tumbler, but I am betting those barrels would be a pain to wash the oil out. I have NEVER heard anyone here doing that and we, literally, have some of the best tumblers in the world.
BTW Welcome from Virginia!
