Hi guys, Have two rocks that I'd love some ID help on. Are they poppy jasper? If not, what are they? This first rock is from northern Santa Clara county, California: I have 3 pictures of the 2nd rock. It is from San Benito county. The first one shows a portion that I ground flat and wetted for the picture. Thanks all in advance!

They sure look like Poppy Jaspers to me. The first one has similarities to Olympic Poppy Jasper. The second one has the colorization of Morgan Hill, with the classic yellows and reds. The "poppies" don't look right (to me) for Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper. I might be wrong...and am open to correction...but I think there are a lot of "unnamed" poppy jaspers along the entire West Coast. They're cool finds!!

Thanks for the id! I just got my saw cleaned out and the oil is on deck and once poured I'll cut the second rock to have a good look inside!

Here it is. The poppies seem to have grown in a light colored matrix, maybe quartz or agate. The yellow areas are porous. Many of the poppies don't seem to be well defined. :\

I agree with jasoninsd, many similar characteristics to Olympic orbicular jasper. It cuts really well if you're a cabber, and tumbles great if you're a tumbler. It's one of my favorite materials to work with.

Now… if that was found in Dino dung, that would be some real nice “poopy” jasper.

choochoorocks It's an orbicular jasper. Not sure I'd call it Poppy, though. I found 2 pieces very similar to yours at Lands End in San Francisco at the beach that's accessible from that trail. Lynn
