Vegasjames, what are the large pieces and what was processed? The mine is supposed to be an old gypsum mine as is the second mine right up the road from this one. What is odd is that I have never found a single trace of gypsum at either site. Normally at mine sites I find a lot of what they were mining for.
The smaller structures looking like oversized tumblers are crushers. No idea what the spikes are for on the outside.
The really large cylinders had fire brick lining them all the way at one time. They still have some fire brick in them. These are rotary kilns, which were rotated and heated to a high temp to drive off the water in the gypsum (hydrated calcium sulfate) to form anhydrite (calcium sulfate) for wall board.

The fire bricks were the interesting part because I wondered what kind of the material would have been rotated in the kiln, dried, removed and then reloaded.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing! Yes that definitely looks like a ball mill crusher. The "spikes" on the outside are typically the threaded end of bolts/nuts used for attaching the replaceable inner liners of the drum. That's how the small ball mill I have at home is setup. Looks like it was a pretty serious operation at one point.

Nice pics! Thanks for sharing. I love photographing old industrial stuff like this and am a bit jealous of your access to this place.

Very cool. Thanks for posting the pics (and Jax)!
Isn't it amazing how the graffiti "artists" manage to find that in the middle of the desert and bring enough spray paint with them?
