I picked up a nice looking slab of Cherry Creek Jasper the other day. I cabbed a piece yesterday. I really like the looks of it but I can't get any shine at all. It was obviously fairly soft as I was grinding it. Anyone have any tips to help me get some gloss on this?

Hmmm. I’d almost advise more time on the 1200 and 3000 wheel. Then apply ample pressure on your polishing pad.

For softer stones, after cabbing I use a buffing wheel with just a tiny bit of Zam applied. Then buff the stone. Shines the stone and seals it.

If you do a Google image search of "Cherry Creek Cabochons", you'll see there's actually very few that have a good polish on them. I think the material is like Noreena...where some material will polish, while other batches of material aren't going to polish no matter what you do. I've worked a couple pieces of Cherry Creek and could never get the stuff I had to polish at all...

What types of polish do you have? Well, I should know that, but I've been applying AO to a leather pad that already had something else on it. Not the best but it's actually pretty well on most stones.

For softer stones, after cabbing I use a buffing wheel with just a tiny bit of Zam applied. Then buff the stone. Shines the stone and seals it. I've been meaning to get some Zam. I was also wondering about chromium oxide as I have a jade wheel. I looked at some and see what you mean but they still have more shine than this. I do have two Noreena slabs though, one polishes pretty good the other not so good. Used 1200 dry Then 300 dry. I do this with noreena also Interesting. Do you use light pressure? And am I right in assuming you meant 1200 and 3000 dry?

Not the best but it's actually pretty well on most stones. Each material can have special polishing needs. I generally use 100k diamond paste on canvas. I have tried zam on canvas. I also tried tin oxide or cerium oxide on leather. That was on my star diamond machine which not working now. Paul/fencejumper uses wheels and gets an excellent polish on MHPJ and Noreena. I haven't had much luck with Noreena, but don't work on it very much. My diamond paste stopped doing a good job so I tried other methods. I bought a new canvas pad with new paste and I'm back only using the 100k.

Yep, I definitely need some new pads. I have a little diamond paste but the pads I've used with it are felt. I think wool felt.

I don't know how Paul isn't jacking up his diamond wheels going dry. I tried that with Noreena...melted the flat lap disk onto my cab. Tried doing it with some Bat Cave jasper on the cabbing machine...and pretty sure I jacked up my Nova wheels somewhat by doing it. I'm not saying he's wrong...because he gets results. I just don't how he's doing it! LOL

Well it's cool looking stuff just the same.
No clue on polish - only to give a +2 for zam in the back pocket for soft stones.
I use it dry on a buffing wheel on my polisher, and have gotten good results for chrysocolla.
