I have been cabbing on a two wheel poly arbor for the last couple years, but my friend Brian at the local club found a new machine for me, an awesome 8-inch Highland park A-50 with 6 diamond wheels from 80 hard Galaxy to a 3000 or 8000 Nova. These wheels are hardly broken in, and have an incredible amount of life left. Over the past couple weeks, I've been working with some of the really awesome old timers at the club to convert it properly and get the water and wheel layout correct. This mind you, was mostly me standing by and watching them figure out how to do something, then helping them get there to the best of my ability. This unit is a solid cast-aluminum unit that I see as comparable or even better than a titan unit. With solid American ball bearings and a 3/4 inch steel shaft, it is an absolute work of art to watch run. Things appear to finally falling into place for me in the rock world although the real world has continued to be a slow work in progress. This summer is going to be focused on bettering myself because I've definitely come to the realization that you don't really have anyone besides yourself and family after that recently. I care a lot for you people of this forum and I apologize for spending so little time interacting with you guys in the past several months. Keep in mind that you all matter. Keep on rockin' and rollin', -Nicholas

Hey Nicholas! That is AWESOME!! That's really cool...not only the new (to you) machine, but that you get to work with the old-timers willing to teach a thing or two! Sounds like "life" is throwing you for some loops...I hope you're doing as well as it sounds. You are always a positive person here on the forum...so I hope you keep in mind YOU matter!

Sounds like an awesome machine. I eyeballed those a little bit when I was shopping. And, having the old-timers too is really nice. Our trim saw came from and old long ago member of a local club. We bought it from his wife after he passed and then had another old timer refurbish it for us. He now too is gone. But I think it's good that these guys live on in our tools. Hang out with them while you can. It's good for everyone.

Old people are my favorite. Way easier to get along with than most people these days. Life was a little hard on me for the past year or so, but all I see is clear skies from now forward, so things should be good. I'm doing pretty dang good, despite past struggles.

This one was an old couple's main machine, and the husband recently passed away. The wife is a friend of my friend Brian, and he let her know he was interested for me, and then picked it up. Couldn't agree more with that. The previous generations were amazingly complex people.

The club in Portland had one of those in the lapidary shop for a long time, I fixed up another that came on a cabinet base along with a 10" trim/slab saw, super robust machines.

I'm jelly you got to hang with the old timers. Thank you, I can't wait to get it spinning and cut some cabs. My club is almost completely run by old timers, which is awesome. I've made friends with most of them too. They're really cool to interact with.

If more of the "younger" generations would spend more time listening than they do talking, the "older" generation have SO many stories to tell! I love listening to the stories of how it used to be or how it used to be done "back in the old days"! (Unless it's the walk to school uphill both ways barefoot through waist deep snow type of stories! LOL)

That's awesome Nicholas! That's a solid machine that should last forever. I've done a bit of work on 8" wheels and it's really nice having all that real estate. Enjoy it and have fun, but get some pics on here too!

I've learned so much not just about rock but also the world, and their experiences over the years. It seems like this is a pretty unique experience, and I'm grateful to have fallen into it. My good friend Brian at the club is a Vietnam war veteran who has said several things that have changed my view of the world. Obviously this is a little bit off the rockin' path, so I will say that they have taught me, building from the ground up, as much as they can about lapidary as a hobby, which has greatly opened my view of the hobby as a whole.

Looks like I might finally start catching up on my cab quota. As a current 3x8 expandable drum cabber, I agree, 8 inch wheels have acres in comparison to itty bitty (no offense 6 inch wheel lovers!) 6 inch guys. I plan on being buried with this thing, just like that big oil company executive and his car several years back.

Congrats on the cabbing machine, Nicholas! Awesome that you're friends with the "old timers". I suppose I can be considered an old timer, too, but the old timers at our club are still older than me. Enjoy them and get as much education and knowledge from them as you can. Eventually the old timers will pass and that knowledge will be gone unless someone like you soaks it up and can impart it on another generation if they can tear themselves away from their phones and video games long enough to listen.

Like I was saying to Jason, I bet I'm one of the youngest members on here and at the club, so hopefully I live long enough to pass it on to the next generation (what comes after gen z???). My generation sure doesn't seem to interested in learning, their loss in my opinion. -Nicholas

Yes perkins17 there loss your gain, the old timers in my life have always showered me with love when they see me passionate aboutthe things they are passionate about. Be this old cars, music or lapidary it's a thing so just remember to pass it forward and reach what you know. I'm happy for your rock world you have been happily humble and I see rewards being paid for that great attitude. As for life I'm just 35 but at 25 I was a real mess, tryin to figure out life the world and it's oddities how I fit in and who I was. I had gotten. To a point where I admitted I had screwed myself up haha. perkins17 brother how's your relationship with Jesus do you have one? Jesus is the real deal man he fills holes in our hearts he brings us all to common ground and Jesus is the epitome of a good man a strong man and a brave man. You want to strike up a conversation I'll be your sounding board. Dm me friend let us discuss important things as we also discuss our love for His creation. All the best nic.

Yeah man, I've got a lot of room to grow still. I have a pretty good relationship with God, and I have been Catholic since birth, although I haven't been too good about getting to church lately. I'm totally open if you ever want to talk. Thank you my friend. -Nicholas
