I may become emperor of dumb-question land before the next couple of weeks are up. I somewhat surprisingly found myself the elated new owner of some used equipment and now I'm trying to figure it out.
One of the pieces was a Lortone TS-8 saw with a hood, but it's a bit older than the most recent models. It's the traditional Lortone blue, and doesn't have the exact design features of the current model (whose manual I can find online - that would've been handy!)
It definitely needs the rust cleaned up (probably will be an oil-only machine in my workshop just to hold off any more rusting), but it runs. When I opened it up to clean up, check condition, etc., I was surprised to find a length of 2x4 inside (doing my best to affix pic below). When I look up other older TS-8 saws, they have it too, attached to the frame with a spring, and with a bolt above (presumably so you can push it down into the coolant?)
What is this for? Is it there to displace coolant and raise levels so you don't have to refill as often?
Does this have a drain plug I've overlooked? Or did this model just not have one? (I didn't see it where the most recent manual said it should be.)
Have any of you worked with this saw? Any insights you can offer, however small, would be appreciated. I'm elated to have it, but want to understand it.

I've been through 3 of these over several years, one had the 2x4. I think it is to raise the coolant level, tossed it out. I did put a half pipe coupler in for a drain at the same location shown on the newer ones. Two of mine were way more rusty, sandblasted the tub and painted the inside with "Hammerite Rust Encapsulating" paint. It is a little hard to find here but works well. Bearings aren't expensive if you need them and I put everything together with stainless fasteners.

Might also be to stiffen up the walls as I believe the vise is mounted to the tub walls and can flex when cutting. The 2x4 would help to eliminate the flex.
