I wound up with yesterday afternoon off, so got to play in the studio, work on a couple of cabs & finish up a wrap. All and all a nice way to spend some unwind time . First one is Caldera Paint Jasper, that I finally got around to cabbing. If you don't know it's a flavor of Gary Green Jasper. I lucked into this awhile ago from susand24224 ( THANK YOU again Susan) and I'm still pinching myself that I did The pattern in the rock makes me think of petrified wood, with the grain - but now that I think about it I believe Gary Green is indeed a bog wood, so OK, Patty, it's a petrified wood of sorts ! Still stewing on the right wrap for it . The second one is a really cool stone- but I have no idea what it is. It was a little crumbly, so I stabilized it with my epoxy technique. Not 1000% the polish I could dream for - but passable. Any one know what kind of stone it is ?? Thanks for looking, Patty

liveoak I could be wrong, but the triangle one sure looks like Kaleidoscope Jasper to me. The older stuff. Kaleidoscope was well known for being crumbly.

Kaleidoscope Jasper it sure looks like !
It's pretty stuff - too bad I only had the one small slab.
Guess I better figure out something nice to use it for.

liveoak gary green, caldera, ellipso, freedom Jasper, etc... All the jaspers from that claim are not pet wood or bog, Dale the former claim owner had it checked out and it is jasper, at least by name. There is no organic origin to it at all, the "grain" is most likely sedimentary or a type of banding.

You obviously know more about this than I do but my curiosity leads me to ask questions. I know there's opalized wood, agatized wood, and "jasperized" wood--if organic material is no longer present, does that preclude an originally organic base? Or is there any way to tell? Thanks in advance!

That was absolutely what I thought when I saw it - Kaleidoscope jasper, the lighter yellow material & often times the reds in Kscope would undercut like crazy.

Thanks in advance! Dale Hewitt sent samples to be examined by someone who had a lab to do such things, and they said not petrified wood. Can Jasper replace wood? Definitely, jasper is silica and metamorphic like agate or opal, the line between them is pretty vague at times, agate and jasper anyway.

I love the shape of the top cab (love a good freeform!) and the color in the bottom piece. Beautiful work!

Actually both cabs are from templates that I made.
I'm not good at a free form, I think I overly stress over them.
Thanks for looking,

Great job on those two. They both look difficult to work with. TFS

Very pretty cabs and I am going to have to review your stabilization process. Stabilization of some pretty but crumbly stone is a skill I think I might use.

Here's a link to my quick & dirty stabilization method.
Others have different ideas - but this seems to work for me, so I'm satisfied
Thanks for looking, Patty

Patty thank you for the link, I am going to copy your method down on a note card for reference. I don’t do big batches of anything so this stabilization method looks perfect for me.
