Nice looking material with lots of nice colors. Always wondered about that NW corner of New Mexico with the Capulin Volcano National Monument. I suppose the agate is somewhat associated with the past Volcanic activity.

HankRocks, I would also like to know exactly where I visited but was simply following directions to get to a leased ranch in an area that I was not familiar with. I remember the ranch was divided by a road and was a higher elevation compared to the highway from GUY leading to it. One side(south) of the ranch had some large boulders of granite and agate on the other side that sloped to a gulley. The owner of the ranch actually stopped by with some friends and collected on the road cut going to the very small cabin that we were staying in for several days. There was definitely several acres of this material on the surface interspersed with the juniper and was easy to collect. I probably collected about 50 lbs. of what I thought was good material but not knowing what it was at the time. A rock shop owner in Fort Myers, Fl. identified this material for me at a later time. We lived in Fort Myers, Fl. in the 60's/70's and visited my wife' parents in Dimmitt, Tx. during each summer. My mother-in-law was kind enough to get permission to visit this place.

Time, I had no clue as to the type of material available in that part of NM other than volcanic glass. I was collecting/buying colorful wood, Mexican Lace+ and plume from the Marfa/Alpine/Needle Peak area plus colorful material from the western US at that time. It turned out that rosebud agate polishes extremely well in the UV-18 vibe but does have cracks that need to be worked around. I wish I had collected more but hesitated to move more of an unknown quality rock back to south FL. where we lived. I never made it back to this ranch but did wonder if non-surface material had fewer cracks and was of better quality.

Interesting stuff. My quick consulation of Jay Ellis Ransom's Gems and Minerals of America (section on Union Co. New Mexico which coincides with your mention of Guy, NM) discloses a listing of rose agate on a hill near the 3 state monument having surface exposures of agate. Probably the same stuff. I'm struck with the similarity of colors but perhaps simpler patterns of agates collected further south and west Near Abiquiu, NM. I know there is lots of confusion in the literature as to what is agate and what is the Pedernal chert material from that area, so its a bit messy especially as you go into the reds with black boundaries that show up as rarer than the pinks characterisitic of the chert formations. Any way, nice material. I always enjoy the things you draw out of your historical collections.

Any more my rock hunting activity is pretty much confined to an area in about a 50 mile radius of Austin. If other activities take me further afield I keep my eyes out for rocks to take home but don’t plan trips just for that purpose. The exception might be an adventure down Big Bend way if I energy up with some B-12.
