As near as I can tell (I'm a Newbie -2013) RTH began in England around 2003 - Purpose = to sell Tumblers. There was a lot of response here in the US. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1790/threadNow 20 years later, mid 2023 look at what we are interested in: In spite of the name appealing directly to tumblers, MORE members are cabers. The threads I am interested in don't do as well. My interests are: 1. Out in the hills collecting. 2. Identifying 3. Understanding how they formed. 4. the Astronomy, Geology, Chemistry, Physics of it all. Where do we go from here?

Many times the original intent can blossom into something else. Tumbling, geode cracking, cabbing, once Rocks and minerals are getting the love I think it's a good thing.
I look at it as being able to see a world I may never have otherwise seen, and I am grateful. I knew nothing about agates and thundereggs when i restarted my interest, and I now find it slightly more interesting than geodes. Slightly. You know I am all about that geode life

So...of those posts and threads in the Creating Cabochons section, I'm probably responsible for a TON of those! LOL
I have noticed over the last several years, the amount of posting of tumbles in the tumbling forum seems to have dwindled. Some of the SUPER active posters in that section have backed off from posting. I believe it's cyclical...at least I'm hoping it is.
There are a TON of new members who come to the forum because of tumbling...yet only a small percentage of those members actively post. I think part of it is because it's difficult to figure out how to post pics (for some), others it's because they're relatively "shy" when it comes to posting on a forum (unlike me! LOL), and still others might be apprehensive about posting pics of their beginning tumbles...which I wish they wouldn't be as that's how things are learned...from our mistakes...at least that's how it's supposed to be.
I truly wish some of the more experienced tumblers would more actively post pics of their tumbles...even if it's pics of they're past tumbles...and maybe a little info on "how" they tumbled a specific type of rock...things that could be used as a reference if people searched for a specific material.
I also wish I could win the Powerball drawing tonight...but...we all know how that'll likely go! LOL

Currently I have two different batches running, one in a Model B has about 40 medium slabs which is in 500 AO and hope to go to the UV-18 this Fri or Sat for Polishing. Have another batch in a Model B of 20 large slabs which is in 220 and is still over two weeks away from polishing. The large slabs will need to stay in the Rotary for the polish run as they will get jammed up in the UV-18. Pictures will be posted of each batch upon completion and my schedule. Have another Model B batch running with an interesting 2 pound piece of Palm. It's on it's 3rd 8 day coarse run(35-70) and may require at least one or maybe more coarse runs before ready to move on. Pictures will be posted. One problem I have had with retirement, so many irons in the fire, I had to build more fires!! And then there's always those pesky doctors.!!! Henry

Henry Henry, I hope you didn't take what I said as throwing anyone in particular "under the bus"... I love seeing your tumbles! I've read a lot of your threads where you tumbled slabs...and took some bits of advice out of them for my own tumbling of slabs. I know I need to get off my duff and get to tumbling some stuff. My tumblers have been idle for quite awhile. I've got a batch of slabs that I'd like to run through the UV-18...and I'm hoping I'm not going to have a clogging issue. I'm planning on plenty of media to try and prevent that...

I once matched all the numbers but one....except the ticket was from the week before. Talk about luck. I am the worst person for forgetting to take photos but I really should post more. I've tumbled some really nice stuff over the last few years and have a few cabs in progress. I'll see what I can dig up this weekend to spam the forums with. You have been warned. Rocks and lapidary took a backseat last year with an unexpected addition of another rockhound to our family and general life. Now things are calming down and I should have more hobby time again once summer winds down. I have so many ideas.....

I wish I had time to post more. Like actual posts not just replies and comments. But… life. Just too much on my plate. I also wish I knew more of the science behind these rocks but again… life. Just don’t have time to study. The little contests and challenges (cab, wire wrap) spur me to eek out time to do a little bit of this hobby during an otherwise too busy month for me. So, that’s good, if it gets people moving to do a bit more than they’d do on their own. I’d like to see more and do more activity in the metal smithing side and really just all kinds of crafts or building projects. I feel like I was born to be retired but for seem reason that hasn’t come to fruition yet.🫤

khara - All the seniors I know say they're busier after retirement than they ever were when they worked. I wonder if any other members can chime in on that front. I remember eons ago seeing a post from an old member asking what happened to the founder of RTH but I had no idea it was started in England. I always assumed it was started by the guy who runs (ran?) rocktumbler.com.

NOW I do what I'm interested in, and I can't keep up!
"Andy" was fazing out when I came aboard, so I would like to know more about the founding myself.

In spite of the name appealing directly to tumblers, MORE members are cabers. Doubt it. Fwiw, cab contest averages nine entries this year. By sheer numbers of members who have joined, including lurkers who have never posted and those who have posted once or twice, tumbler owners are probably the majority, but by participation those of us who have gone deeper down the rabbit hole are much more active.

Since no one asked . . . cabbers cut cabs. Men in pleated skirts toss cabers. : )
