I was able to sneak in some wheel time & eake out a couple of cabs
First one was ID'd as Pyrite from Skarn Deposit
Second one is "Yavapai Opal Agate", that I got from drocknut a while ago ( thanks Diane) This stuff is REALLY hard & took a wicked polish.
Third one is some self collected (GA boat launch) quartz or quartzite ?
I'm in love with the shape of this one.
Four ? hoping on ID , if someone knows. I never made a marquis shaped cab before - now I need to try other sizes.
Thanks for looking,
Patty

Love the set, Patty, especially your Yavapai Opal Agate. Seems a little odd to me that it would be an "opal agate" and not have at least one or some softer (opal) areas. The pattern and the shape you chose for it are great.

I kept seeing that slab as a piece of an old brick wall , so the rectangular cab seemed to fit.
Not sure why it's called "Opal", as in the piece I cabbed, I didn't find any soft spots- it was Hard. But maybe other areas are softer ?
What's neat is that the different layers are either opaque or translucent, but separated by distinct lines.
Thanks for looking,
Patty

Thanks for tagging me. Yes, that material can be super hard and takes a great polish. We haven't really arrived on a good name for the material yet. I started calling it Yavapai Opal Agate because it has layers of both agate and common opal and opalized clay, along with pastelite, which are pretty hard. A friend on Facebook worked some, and one of his friends suggested calling it Arizona Dendritic Agate, but I'm still not really sure about an appropriate name. It will fluoresce too.

The pattern and the shape you chose for it are great. There are some softer spots in some of the pieces, and it depends on how it's cut as to if it has softer spots or not. It's more common opal, so it's harder than precious opal. What I'm calling opal could also be more of a mix of pastelite and clay. I asked a geologist to analyze a piece for me, but he said he had lost the piece I gave him.

Patty, I forgot to add that number 4 looks almost like some kind of oolite.

drocknut Thank you Diane for further info on the stone's characteristics. I only know it looks pretty & can't wait to try my UV flashlight after dark Also, thanks for your thoughts on the mystery cab, I got a couple for responses on the ID thread, which seem correct, so I think the #4 is Leopard Skin Rhyrolite.
Thanks,
Patty

I really like the second and last one. The shape of the 3rd is pretty cool. Looks like it would be a fun one to wrap. I have a feeling that first one is one that looks a lot better in person.

Thanks rockbrain . You are right , the pyrite in person is nicer. I think I might try and use some brass wire to wrap it ? It was a pretty thin slab, so it's more of a flat top - but that kind of emphasized the pyrite inclusion. The Quartzite shape was one I adopted from the roaming wire box. To me it seems to have a lot going on and I think will be nice to do a woven wrap for. Thanks for looking, Patty

Niiiice! I like them all, but the first one is coolest to me. #4 could be bird's eye rhyolite.

Thank you Tela, rockjunquie . Glad to see you back
I wonder now how you can tell the difference between bird's eye, leopard skin & oolite ? I think maybe, just maybe it's" Leopard bird oolite rhyolite"
It's pretty, that's all I really know.

That last cab is amazing. I mean, they all are, but that one in particular, wow! Any idea where the material is from?

Thanks Mel, Mel I've had a couple of people suggest different id's. Bird's eye, leopard skin & oolite rhyolite. Not sure how I can tell the difference, since I don't know where it came from (except a box of slabs I purchased). I think I can safely call it a ryolite. Thanks for looking, Patty

All of them are quite nice. #1 I especially like because it is Pyrite, it always fascinates me, and the shape of #4 (leopard skin rhyolite?) is stunning, I think that one came out perfectly. TFS

I had never cut a "marquis" cab before & I agree it's a great shape.
I made it for a specific jewelry design I'm planning,.
You should try one - I plan to make some templates of different sizes.
